Hotel in Huntington/Newport Area
Traveling to Huntington & Newport Beach area in a couple weeks. Any favorite pics on hotels? How about these:
Holiday Inn Express on W. Coast Hwy
Best Western on Beach Blvd.
Econo Lodge on PCH (between Sunset & Surfside)
All suggestions & reviews appreciated. Would like something within a few miles of the beach. Thank you everyone.

We were in Newport Beach at the beginning of July and drove between Newport and Huntington on a couple of days.
We stayed at the Hyatt Newporter, which is across a busier street from the beach, but with lush grounds and several swimming pools. We drove a short way to some very nice beaches--I think our favorite was called Margerite Beach, or something similar. You walk down to it from a higher cliff. Very clean and family friendly, if that is what you are looking for. Nice waves for body surfing when we were there.
Hyatt often offers great deals on-line or if you call directly before you go.
The Hyatt in Huntington Beach is more upscale, and a close walk across to the beach. We know people who have stayed there--not sure good deals are possible at this popular place. But the beach itself was more crowded with surfers in the day, and looked to be the party place at night with bonfires ablaze every few feet. Just more activity.
There are a ton of smaller hotels/motels along PCH between Newport and Hungtington. I am sorry I don't remember the names. I would look into them carefully. They are often very different. Across PCH from the beach does not seem like a great location to me, unless the hotel (or hotel grounds) is a draw on its own.
Newport was a good choice for us because we liked the smaller beaches and the great bikeway/path right along the beach.

The Holiday Inn Express it a great location, it's across the street from the Harbor. A nice bed & breakfast by Newport Pier is The Portifino. Huntington Beach has the Hyatt and Hilton overlooking the beach. Balboa Bay Club Resort right on the harbor. Marriott Newport Beach at Newport Center and Marriott Newport Suites in the back bay. A great harbor cruise to take is with Watts on the Harbor Cruises. 2+ hour cruise with food and beverages, hotel pick-up in a Duffy Electric Boat. Very relaxing. Enjoy your visit.

Beware of being right on PCH/Coast Hwy. It will be very noisy during the summer. Of course, at night, it does quiet down a bit, but Harleys flying by will definitely wake you a few times...
I prefer Newport to Huntington Beach. If you get to the beach early in the morning, you'll get a parking spot. Huntington Beach seems to be filled with more "surfer dude" types while Newport has more tourists and seems friendlier to me. (p.s. I'm a local OC resident)
Are you planning to do any biking or rollerblading on the bike paths? Please be aware to keep to the right... If I could educate everyone (both locals and tourists) it would help keep the paths running smoothly. Please don't load up 6 people, all side by side and walk down the two-way bike path totally blocking everyone and bringing traffic to a halt. That is soo annoying! I'm not saying YOU will do that... I just wanted to at least offer up a small PSA.
Enjoy! The weather has been mild lately - cooler in the morning and then getting warm in the afternoon. A few weeks ago it was blazing hot all day, but we may be cooling off early for Fall....

Hi Kat,
Just got back from Newport Beach on Saturday. We too stayed at the Hyatt and got a great deal on the rate. We liked the location although you do have to drive to the beach. Parked near Newport pier one day and Balboa pier the next and never had a problem with parking. Loved Newport Beach. The hotel is also quite close to Balboa Island which is fun to walk around and has lots of restaurants. Fashion Island is close to the Hyatt and has a fantastic food court.
If you are staying a week, consider renting a house either on or near the boardwalk around either pier. I would love to do that next time.
Have a great time, we did!

Thanks everyone for the tips. And no offense taking Simone---------- I totally understand. Keeping my fingers crossed for some nice warm afternoon weather. The boys will be so upset to get over there and the waters too cold. We have had triple digits here for several weeks. Looking forward to some nice cool evening weather.
