Each avenue has one or more "magic numbers." Here's how it works:
1. Take off the last digit of the building number. Using your example, 245 becomes 24.
2. Divide the remainder number by 2.
24/2=12
3. Add or subtract the magic number for the particular avenue.
Fifth Ave's number for addresses 200-400 is +16, so 245 Fifth Ave is at 28th Street. 12+16=28
Here are a few easy numbers:
Avenues A, B, C, D, First Ave & Second Ave: +3
Third Ave: +10
6th Ave: -12
Lex Ave: +22
Mad Ave: +26
Charts are available in most bookstores.

The formula is different for every street and even different sections of the same avenue. Try this link--

Keep in mind that this can be off by a couple of blocks, so its always best to ask what the cross is. Most publications, like TimeOut NY or Zagats, give the cross street as aprt of the address.

Correction to Jess's post: The FORMULA is the same, but the magic number differs by address on some avenues. For example, with Fifth Avenue, the magic numbers are as follows:
Up to 200 +13
Up to 400 +16
Up to 600 +18
Up to 775 +20
Fortunately, most of the avenues have only one magic number, as noted above.
Exceptions to the general formula are Central Park West and Riverside Drive. For CPW, divide the address by 10 and add 60 to find the cross street. For Riverside Dr, divide by 10 and add 72. Or just call your destination and ask.
