A little late on my reply to soccr; but my disappointment at those beaches, from what I remember, was the 'dirty' sand. At LaJolla, the dirt from the eroding cliffs seems to mess up the beach sand. Ogunquit is an amazing expanse of the purest and finest white sand. It is situated on a peninsula, where the ocean is open and the waves are big, rather than in a cove. Don't get me wrong, I love CA, I just was disappointed by the beaches when visiting in my mid 20's, expecting something different from all the movies, etc.

Cindyj, you're "beach naive," I'm afraid -- y'otta go to the Outer Banks or, even better, the Gulf Coast for AMAZING beaches. I was surprised myself when I first went to Calif. coast, but it isn't the sand that they're noted for. I'll take the incredible white Longboat (Sarasota) beach anytime. Ogunquit's COLD.
