How well do you like temperatures below freezing? Some of the best places in the US of A are in the northern states.
Austin, Texas maybe??

Agree completely with Bob. Climate would be my first consideration. There are so many fabulous places to live in the US that you may as well select on with a favorable (to you) climate. What are your preferences?

I have lived in many areas of the USA from East to West and North to South. We live in San Diego, California which I believe to be the most liveable vity in the country.

Vinicius: if you want to avoid cold, I think we need to define it. Right now, in Athens, Georgia, where I live we have had temperatures down into the twenties Fahrenheit for several nights in a row.
I find that cool. We may well have colder temperatures before April arrives.

In the summer, we often get temperatures in the 98 - 102 range with high humidity.

But someplace like Madison, Wisconsin, which is rated by many surveys as a good place to live, often has winter temperatures well below Zero, Fahrenheit.

If you don't want much variation, San Diego is the place.

Most of the USA, north of Florida and south Texas and east of California, often has huge variations in seasonal temperatures.

The Pacific Northwest has some nice towns and cities. And the climate is relatively mild. How about Corvallis, Oregon? The problem there is that it rains a lot this time of hear.
The temperature extremes are relatively mild, particularly when compared to Minot, ND.

If you like dry climates, try Sedona Arizona or Boise Idaho. There are many who will swear by both places.

Vinicius:

San Diego is recognized as having the best climate in the USA, In fact it's climate is rated the 2nd best in the world. It is neither hot nor cold. We do not need air conditioning.

Hi Sam! I think we met on usenet.

What is #1 ?

The other advantages I've heard about San Diego are that it is big enough to provide lots of opportunities and resources yet not too big and overcrowded and it is clean.

No one has mentioned Hawaii yet. I am sure many people would like to live there if not for the major obstacles:

1. High cost of living

2. Limited work available

3. Expensive and time-consuming to travel to mainland.

I seem to recall meeting you but I am not sure where.

It is very true what you said about San Diego. The economy is booming, the city and area is very clean, low crime rate, etc. San Diego is still a very liveable city. You also have a fairly wide variety of living choices within the area. Different climates, rural, urban, etc.

The downside is that the area is growing very rapidly. We now have some significant traffic problems.

Newark, New Jersey, East St. Louis, Illinois, Detroit, Michigan and Gary, Indiana are my recommendations.

I think San Diego is nice, and very clean, but I came from Sao Paulo, and I think that you'll find very few american cities have the same sort of pulse that major foreign cities have. American cities are very spread out, very car-oriented. Generally, the downtowns are lonely after dark. They are not geared for the pedestrian, and public transit, outside of 2 or 3 dense urban cores is lousy( to put it mildly) Weather is matter of opinion. San Diego has nice weather, but some would disagree. I personally favor the climate in another Califronia city that I find more attractive than San Diego because of the Arts and culture as well as natural beauty. San Francisco had 1 million people come into the city from the suburbs and valleys to celebrate the New Year, theres a reason for that, its the place to be.

Climate is one consideration but there are others that I would rate as equally important: cultural life (museums, restaurants, theatre, bookstores, etc.), economic vitality, cost of living, the aesthetics of the city (architecture, parks, natural beauty), ethnic diversity, infrastructure such as public transportation/airports/roads, history, neighborhoods, recreation opportunities, etc. For all these reasons I love living in Washington, DC. There are other cities in the U.S. that I love to visit -- such as Austin, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Charleston, Miami, LA -- but I wouldn't want to live in any of them. Washington DC is my #1 choice.

I vote with Lisa -- I've lived in Cleveland, Chicago, LA, NYC, West Lafayette IN, but have been in the DC area for about 27 years now, and raised a family here. It is close enough for day/weekend trips to the beaches, or mountains, or other big cities (NY, Philadelphia, Baltimore). Plus there is a wonderful international community. If you are interested in an "academic" setting, Charlottesville, VA or Chapel Hill, NC would be good choices.
