Hello! My husband and I are hoping to take a much-needed weekend away from NYC, and visit Long Island's wineries. I have seen the L.I. Wine Country Winter Festival Passport, which looks like a great deal.

We're looking for a cozy and clean B&B for 2 nights in February (maybe March), preferably under $100 per night. I know this might be a stretch, but any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

if you scroll down past the wineries and the restaurants, starting on page 10, there are several pages of b & bs listed. Most look to be around $200/night, but this one is toward the beginning of the list and looked cheaper. Have no idea how nice it is.

I'm more familiar with the south fork (Hamptons) where there are 3 wineries. The Enclave Inn either in Bridgehampton or Wainscott locations (more motel with cottages than b & b) has some special winter rates as low as $89 and it's not bad at all.

You'd need to take 2 short ferries to get to the north fork, but very doable. The ferry puts you in Greenport.

I did contact the Always In, but they are apparently "out" this season! The innkeeper is not taking guests this winter due to a recent surgery.

If we can't find anything within our budget, we may consider driving in early Saturday morning. Obviously, I'd prefer an additional night of R&R, but we'll have to see what we come up with!

I look forward to hearing any additional suggestions, particularly from people who have spent a winter weekend/vacation in this area.

tarheels...make sure you go to "lenz" winery on the north fork, and if you are on the south fork, go to "wolffer". you won't be sorry! some tips for dinner..."cliffs elbow room" in jamesport for steak and locals, and "modern snack bar" in jamesport (also on the north fork) for homeade, comfort, food!

If you are focusing your trip around winery visits, the North Fork will be more convenient. My favorite there is Paumanok in Aguebogue; this is among the most westerly of the wineries on the North Fork, only about 15 minutes or less from the last exit on the LIE, if you are driving. In Greenport I can recommend Stirling House B&B. Their web site is:
stirlinghousebandb.com; there are many others and since this is low season you might be able to get a room for $100; call them and ask. A popular place for year round dining close to Greenport is the Hellenic, a Greek casual place with all kinds of dishes on their long menu. The best year-round place to eat on the North Fork, in my opinion, is the Frisky Oyster in Greenport; less expensive is the Chowder Pot pub, also in Greenport near the ferry, train station, and bus depot. The prettiest village on the North Fork is Orient, not Orient Point but the hamlet of Orient. (I admit I am a bit biased since I live here most of the summer months) If you want to stay this far east, you can try the Orient Inn on the Main Road between Orient hamlet and the Oreint Point ferry. They may be in your price range in the winter.

I just came back from a great weekend out there. We stayed at the Chequit Inn: http://www.shelterislandinns.com/chequit/ . It is on Shelter Island, which is about a 10-15 minute ferry ride; ferries run every 10 minutes until midnight. Our room was small but very cozy and very clean; it was a lovely inn just a few blocks from the north ferry.
