Let's talk New York PIZZA!

I love NY pizza, get it every time I go to teh city. I'll be going to New York next month, but only for a day. I'm going to be going solo, and this time I really wanna try Lombardi's. My question is, do they sell it by the slice, or do I have to buy a whole PIE? I only want a couple of slices.

I had kosher pizza once, in the Herald Square area, it was outstanding. I want to try Lombardi's this time, if they sell by the slice. Or how is Ray's (the one on 6th Ave. at 11th Street? Thanks!

Lombardi's is a sit-down restaurant and as far as I know does not sell by-the-slice. Grimaldi's is the same. Few argue that they offer the best pizza in NYC.

I live in New York and have tried numerous pizza places. I think Lombardi's is highly overrated.
I do however like John's on Bleeker Steet as well as Angelo's Pizza located on West 57th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues.

Ok. I wasn't going to get involved in these pizza wars (no one ever wins) . . . but now I think I will.
As someone who used to live across the street from John's on Bleecker (note the c in Bleecker) I venture that it has noticably deteriorated in the last 5 years. That's not to say it isn't good - even mediocre NY pizza is many notches above most pizza in the rest of the US.
But there are several types of pizza to be had here - traditional thicker crust (which can be found at almost all the neighborhood corner shops that sell slices) or very thin crust, like Johns and Grimaldi's. I can't think of a shop that sells thin crust pizza by the slice - maybe gekko can . . .
Rays at 6th and11th St. I've always found to be gloppy - way too much cheese, but a good sauce and usually good crust, but it can get soggy. Good hangover pizza. You might also try "Cajun" Pizza at Two Boots - several locations around town . . .
I like Lombardi's clam pie - but it's not as good as the clam pies in New Haven. Mario Batali's new place Otto has pretty good pizza (sit down only, no slices) My favorite pizza these days is at Gonzo - they grill a thin crusted, rectangular pizza - with great savory topping like wild mushrooms or pumpkin. But I don't think that's the type of pizz you're looking for . . .
For classic, by the slice NYC pizza, try the place on the corner of Spring and Sullivan(?) across from the playground witht he handball courts. Or the place on the corner of Carmine and Bleecker St., down the block from John's or the place on 7th Avenue and 16th St.
Oh -come to think of it, thin crust pizza is sold by the piece - a mini-trend right now is "pizza by the inch" - very pricy renditions of thin crust pizza, that is sized and cut to your specifications - you can try lots of different slices that way. Pie on 4th Avenue and 12th St. and Pinch on the Upper east side . . .

"Poifect" timing of this thread.

We'll be back in NYC mid May and def want to hit some pie places other than Ray's (we hit them last trip).

We had "Otto's" on the list but we have been known to have more than one pizza stop per visit...like to Chicago.

Mario Batali's Otto definitely offers great pizza, but it's a different atmosphere than the other "pizza places" mentioned in this thread. Otto is a full-size, full-service restaurant with large bar area etc. Very different from Lombardi's or the slice shacks.

I'll second Angelo's, they have another location at 55th Street and Second Avenue. Don't think they sell slices either. Pronto Pizza at 42nd and 5th Avenue makes a good pizza and sells by the slice, but it's small and always packed, especially at lunch time on weekdays.

For a quick slice go to Joe's Pizza on Carmine St between bleecker & 6th (there's actuyally 2 store fronts there). It even gets a 24 in zagat's. Don't bother with Ray's, nothing special there. For a more gourmet pizza in a restaurant, I adore Gonzo's on 12th st between 6th & 7th. It's grilled, with an extremely thing crust and fesh ingredients...perfect!

I'm partial to Bravo Pizza (several locations, several different types of pizza and packed during lunchtime!)!

However, my 2 faves are Grimaldi's and L&B Spumoni Gardens, but both are in Brooklyn, and L&B is way out near Coney Island on the D train.

I'm also a HUGE Angelo's Pizza fan. I lived in the city for 5 years and ate quite a bit of pizza and their's was the best by far. Interestingly enough, the John of John's Pizza is Angelo's son....

The BEST pizza in NYC is in Midwood, Brooklyn at Difara's. Most NYC pizza places are no longer Italian-owned. Dominic DiMarco at DiFara's is a true craftsman, uses top-notch ingredients and takes his time! The NY Times discovered this place so beware of long waits, but there is no comparison!

We loved Grimaldi's. It was our reward for doing the Brooklyn Bridge walk in not-so-nice weather. Interestingly, we claimed the reward prior to the walk.

Really? That will be good for my BF who is on Long Island, since I got him hooked on Grimaldi's. Now if only they would start selling by the slice.....

BTW, you can call ahead and order a pie to go with them I believe instead of waiting on line. And to answer a question a couple behind me on line asked, no, they don't take reservations.

As I previously stated, John's is great. However, I used to work up on 57th st, and if the boss ever wanted to make people stay at the office and work, he would order up a bunch of pies from Angelo's and everyone would stay at their desk so that they could get some.

It's awesome. Oddly enough, I now work two block from Lombardi's, while it s very good, its no Angelos.
