Leeward or Windward in Oahu?

We will be traveling to Oahu in the beginning of April. Due to the fact that we have a large group we have been looking at renting houses.
There is one house on the leeward side of the island in Waianane. Is this a good side to stay on? We are interetsed in snorkling, bodysurfing, relaxing at the beach, and a good dinner every now and again. Not really looking for the "Waikiki experience", but will travel to more touristy places every so often (for the kids in our group who have never been to Hawaii before).

I have also heard wonderful things about the Kailua area. We found a house on the cannal near the beach. Thoughts?

Thanks!!!!

Tracy

OK I just found this post from you. Kailua may be a better option for you than staying on the Leeward side. Traffic in & out of the Leeward side can be a bear, especially at rush hour.

My family stayed in Kailua last year. It is great town. They beaches are beautiful and the restraunts are really fun. Have fun on Oahu.

We drove all around Oahu and IMHO the Leeward Coast was the slum on the island - really gross. I'd stick to the Winward Coast if I were you.
