Leaving for New York tommorow

Any last minute suggestions for me. I'm leaving tommorow. Should I have a car pick me up or just do a taxi? Besides checking in, what is the first thing I should do when I get there. We're staying at the Le Parker Meridien, so any quick inexpensive restuarants. Just something for us to get adapted to the city. My girlfriend has never been to a big city, and I've only been to San Fran, and Toronto. Thanks, this thing has been so much help to me.

If it's just the two of you, I would take a taxi instead of a car service. Taxis are usually plentiful at the airport and you'll get out and into Manhattan quicker and cheaper.

The area near the Parker Meridien isn't known for inexpensive restaurants. However, there are a few. There's a Patsy's pizza on 57th street. There's also Le Bonne Soupe which has wonderful soup and fondue (I think). There are also lots of reasonably priced choices on 9th Ave in the upper 40's and 50's including Pietrasanta (48th or 49th) and a Greek place whose name now escapes me.

Since you are right there, I would suggest you start your visit with a walk through Central Park or else a visit to Rockefeller Center.

Have a great visit!

If it's a nice day (not terribly windy or rainy), go directly to the Empire State Building, straight to the top! This is a great way to orient yourself to the city and its burroughs. Bring a subway map with you and note which stops are where in the city. You can spend a lot of time getting nowhere in New York if you're stuck in traffic, so plan your trips carefully. There's no beating the subway.

Walking is the best way to get adapted and, depending on when you get in, tomorrow's weather is expected to be perfect- sunny, low 50's. The whole week should be pretty nice. Walk over to 5th avenue- rockefeller center, christmas tree, decorations and then walk south toward the empire state building at 34th street. Stop at Bryant Park on 42nd (behind the main library) for coffee and a break from the crowds. If you pick up a sandwich along the way, there are lots of chairs and benches in the park that are perfect for a picnic. Then go to the top of the empire state building if the weather is clear.
