Or is the Chamber of Commerce just putting out a lot of hype? Would it be a nice place to spend a few days if one needs a European fix?

I went there about 7 years ago. It is a beautiful drive from Seattle, well worth the scenery.(if you don't mind seeing some trees stripped from the side of mountains, logging is it called?
Anyway,...It has some "bavarian" style buildings, and some actually decent German restaurants. It was pretty touristy, but a fun way to spend the afternoon. I would not spend more than a day there. When I was there I do not recall any fabulous Inns or hotels, etc.
Have fun!

I would not go there for a European fix...but we do go there and really enjoy the area. There are so many wonderful outdoor things to do and the area is very pretty. So if you enjoy any of that, you will like it.

Do you know how to say, "Ersatz"?
Leavenworth is a nice town in a beautiful Alps-like setting. The architecture tends to be Bavarian(ish), and there are some German restaurants, bistros, and gift shops. That's about it. If you need a European fix, this won't help very much.
Maybe Victoria would be a better choice. I'm just a Yankee, but English friends tell me that Victoria has a true British flavor. Then again, some people don't consider Britian to be very European either!

Having visited Leavenworth about ten years ago as part of a trip down the California coast, I tend to agree wholeheartedly with ALF. The alpine setting is what makes the town distinctive. Otherwise, it is pretty lackluster and touristy. If you decide to go, a few hours will do it. We had a similar experience recently in Helen, Georgia, although there were many more shops and restaurants to choose from. Solvang is another such community, but Danish -flavored instead. We also loved, Victoria, ALF. It was definitely British and had wonderful shops and restaurants, in addition to one of the most beautiful harbors we have seen. There is a pleasant walking area around the harbor, often replete with young musicians from a local college and booths selling "goodies". Just outside the city are the famous Buchart Gardens--absolutely delightful. The Parliament is outlined in lights at night (quite impressive) and the Canadian Railway Empress Hotel ( 5star) serves high tea in the afternoon. We would go back "in a minute".
