L'Auberge Del Mar or Rancho Valencia?

These two hotels look very attractive on their
respective websites. Has anyone been to either, or both, and which is preferred for a luxury experience, including all- round amenities, location, rooms and dining? Thank You.

I haven't stayed in either, but I can give you some idea about location. L'Auberge is across the road from one of the best beaches in the San Diego area. It's also easy walking distance (across the road at the other end of the property) from good shopping and restaurants.

Rancho Valencia is not walking distance from anything, but is valued for its seclusion and privacy. Their restaurant is outstanding, but you would have to drive if you wanted to go elsewhere. Similarly, you would have to drive to a beach.

Both are about the same distance to the touristy areas of San Diego like the Zoo, Sea World, Gaslamp District, etc. One cautionary note, if you are considering a stay in July or August during Del Mar horse racing season both of these hotels may be booked.
