Why should the hotel give you something for free? They will comp rooms, drinks, and meals to people who they KNOW come to play, play regularly, and play a fair amount. And yes, some of these regular players win...but sometimes they don't. I watched a program on Vegas and Larry Flint dropped a million dollars. On the other hand there was a player some years ago at the MGM that took them for 26 million dollars. THAT is NOT "normal".

Hotels will also comp rooms, as has been noted here, for customer satisfaction. It's part of the advertising budget. They really do want their guests to be happy and when something unfortuneate occurs, they want to be sure the customer has fond memories of their establishment and their service.

These places are businesses, and unlike the "old days" when the gambling paid for everything, it doesn't anymore. Every aspect of the operation is expected to make a profit...rooms, food and beverage, as well as gaming. Also, these establishments pay huge taxes..they are still the backbone of our tax base and when the state needs more money, the hotel/casinos are usually the first place the legislature goes.

The bottom line is, unless the hotel is pretty empty at the time you are staying there, it is highly unlikely they are just going to comp you, just because. You certainly are free to try to get something...who knows, you might get somewhere.
