Las Vegas First Timer
My husband and I are going to LV for are 15 w.a. in June. We are staying at the Bally's for it price, location and room size. We are staying for 4 nights and are on a budget. We are needing a some tips on what to do on the strip.
1. Transportation to and from the hotels. What is the easiest and/or cheapest?
2. What shows are good that do not cost $100 a ticket?
3. What are must sees and dos on the strip?
4. Dining. Where is good to eat.
5. Hoover Dam, yes or no?
5. Any other tips are welcome.
Thanks!!

1. Cab or shuttle bus. Cab is easiest, I guess. Shuttle bus is probably cheapest. For first timers shuttle is fun...it takes a looooong time to get to your hotel, but you get to see a lot of the strip.
2. There is a half price ticket outlet down by the M&M's store and the big Coke bottle. They have lots of shows usually available.
3. Must see's and dos on the the strip are Bellagio Fountains, Mirage Volcano. Just walk the strip one direction one day and the other way the next day. Go up to the top of Stratosphere or Eiffel Tower at night to see all of the great lights.
4. Lots and lots of good places to eat. Just depends on your budget and your tastes.
5. Hoover Dam...Never been, YES! Once is enough for me.
6. Take comfortable shoes for walking. Take lots of film. I am a clown collector, so I love to walk down to Circus Circus and make photos of the clowns. I must have the same photo from every visit to Vegas!! I also love to just walk into all of the casinos....be sure to look up at the ceilings!! Join the players clubs in the different casinos. They will give you free stuff and coupons and such! Cross the street only at crosswalks and when the walk light is in your favor!!
Have fun....check out cheapovegas.com

You might want to rent a car if your going to Hoover Dam, I would check to see if Ballys has a shuttle service to take you around the strip or downtown Vegas. A cab would be the next option.
Regarding shows, we just saw SHOWGIRLS OF MAGIC at San Remo hotel next to Tropicana, it was very good. There is magic, comedians, audience participation, showgirls dancing(topless)but done very tastefully. We paid $44 each but you can get in for $39 and I would buy that ticket instead of the "VIP" that we paid for. The theatre is very small and intimate so no need to sit right up front. Also check the Las Vegas Magazine that will be in the hotel room. They have a lot of two-for-one deals for even larger shows than the one that we saw. We had already bought the tickets and didn't see the mag till after.
On the strip there is so much to do. We didn't spend much time gambling, just going to hotel to hotel.
Hope this helped you. Happy anniversary and enjoy!

One of the best illusionists we've seen is Rick Thomas, who performs afternoons at the Tropicana. We paid around $16 each for tickets using coupons from the Weekly Show book in the hotel, but met someone who joined Tropicana's player's club, got a free spin on a giant wheel & won free tickets!

My husband and I went to Vegas for an inexpensive anniversary getaway in July a few years ago. We were very disappointed by our trip out to the Hoover Dam and thought it was a total waste of time but it depends on what you like to do. The traffic was horrible to get out there and park that time of year (hopefully your rental car won't overheat with the A/C on while you sit in a line of traffic like we saw several people). It was very hot and not a whole lot to see. You'll just wish you had driven down farther and jumped into the beautiful lake for a swim instead! In fact, it's become our vacation joke that we don't want to do the Hoover Dam touristy things. You may enjoy it though, you never know. We really enjoyed a leisurely drive out to the red rock park but again it's very hot that time of year so be prepared for the heat. Have fun!

1. Cheap = bus, trolley, and now the tram; easiest - probably taxi, but you are staying in the middle of everything, so plan to walk some.
2. Check out vegas.com for headliners. Many of the noted shows are in excess of $100, but there are alternate ways of getting reduced tickets and lots of good shows available under $100. (sse below)
3. Must see: Bellagio fountains, and lobby area Mirage volcano, Luxor, Paris and Venetian, and Excallibur has a magic show, are among many, many free things to see and do. (see below)
4. Dining can cost plenty or a little. with a modest budget, check out the Crepery in Paris; a number or restaurants in the Dessert Passage mall in Aladdin, and for inexpensive food, the court area in Bally's. Higher end dining exists everywhere, especially Bellagio, Venetian, and Paris.(see below)
5. Depends on what you want. If you've never been, I would recommend going.
Check out cheapovegas.com. it has a wealth of information on everything-lasvegas.
My tip: land in LV with excited curiosity, be patient and tolerant and it'll show you a good time.

1. A cab from the airport is not too expensive. Should cost you $8-$10 for 2 people.
Otherwise use the various hotel trams & shuttles on the strip. There is a bus you can take one-way for a few dollars, we've taken it to the end of the strip and walked back.
2. There are lots of shows in the various casino lounges that are free with the purchase of an $8 drink. This is actually a good option for us because we aren't big drinkers but enjoy a lounge show. Bellagio, Luxor both are good shows for this.
If you want to see a magic show or other go with previous advise above.
3. We get a huge kick out of walking thru each casino. The themes are so well done in the strip casinos. Don't miss Paris, Aladin, Mirage (you can see the white tigers), Venetian, Bellagio Atrium is lovely, NYNY, Luxor, ......
ALSO, many people don't take time to visit the old part of town, check out the Golden Nugget after dark and see the Fremont street light show it's great & free.
4. It really depends on your tastes...there are plenty of great places to eat!
5. Yes, rent a car, go early (avoid the line), park on NV side and walk across. The tour is nice if you are really into it. If you like that sorta thing, while you have the car....the grand canyon west rim is only 1.5 - 2 hours from the dam...not everyone knows this. It's really nice there not many tourists.
Have fun!
