My immediate suggestion is that you take an inexpensive SWA flight from Las Vegas and don't waste the time driving. That is, unless you have 2-3 weeks to do it. You can get a visitors kit from the SF Convention and Visitors Bureau--do a search for them. Also check sfgate.com. There is tons of information on this site as well. The St. Francis is one of the old grand dames of SF and a good choice. You will need to research restaurants and make reservations ahead about 3 weeks at least for the popular ones. See them on sfgate.com Good luck and welcome to San Francisco.

Are you DRIVING to SF from LV, Barry?
If so, kam is right. Don't waste all that time driving through some rather desolate countryside. Take a cheap flight between the two.
As for what to do, Vegas is rather self revealing, you might say. Just start wandering around on the strip in front of your hotel and check out the things that pique your interest. Simply viewing the hotels and walking through them can eat up a couple days.
I'd suggest taking in one of LV's better shows....they're worth the money if it's within your budget. "O" (at the Bellagio...call the concierge now and reserve tickets; you get priority as a future guest), Mystere (at Treasure Island), Danny Gans if you like comedy and impersonations (Mirage) are the top shows.
Bellagio is my favorite hotel in LV. It's quite a place. Pools are great, restaurants very good but very expensive.
SF and the Bay area offer far too many unique and worthwhile things to do to list here. If you have a car I hope you can get to Napa, the redwood forest or to Big Sur.
How long will you be in the States?
