Lake Tahoe, inferior Las Vegas casinos?
We've been to Vegas many many times. If we were to go to Lake Tahoe and stay near the casinos, would it just seem like a mini Las Vegas, but with a lake.

I agree with Crefloors. While Lake Tahoe has casinos, it is completely different. Tahoe is a much more laid back place.
Outdoor activities (skiing, boating, hiking, etc.) have as much or more importance as gambling. The nightlife is not really there to any extent like Las Vegas.
The town of South Lake Tahoe (South Shore) is still more of an alpine village than an urban city. The other areas of Lake Tahoe are definitely small alpine villages.

There was an article in the regional paper today about the changing nature of travelers to Tahoe. No longer does it get the gamblers since they can go to indian casinos nearby their home town. People go to Tahoe more for outdoor adventures and activities. There is specualtion that Horizon will close within 3 years leaving just 3 main casinos in SLT, Harrah's Harvey's & MontBleu. Don't expect the lights and neon that you'd get in Vegas. Tahoe has pretty strict development rules so what you see as far as casinos is all you'll get. No megacasinos either. Bet there are indian casinos in CA that are larger than the ones in SLT.

I think that's true Suzie. Most people I know who gamble go mostly to the Indian casinos close by. They usually go for a few hours to a day and then come home. Before the Indian casinos, these same people usually spent an entire weekend in Tahoe. It's cheaper to do the Indian casinos.
Now, the people I see going to Tahoe are those wanting to ski, hike, etc. Occasionally, I'll see someone plan an overnight trip to gamble and see a show, but not nearly as often as before.
