We like the Inn by the Lake in South Lake Tahoe. www.innbythelake.com It's nothing fancy, but the rooms have gorgeous lakeviews and the outdoor pool is great with a bi-level spa.
We found it to be a very nice central location, especially when we did the drive around the lake. There is a complimentary breakfast and complimentary bikes that we enjoyed riding around the lake.
Next door, is the Dory's Oar where we had a very nice casual lunch and a fine dining (above average) meal. The concierge was great about setting us up for the Windjammer II sunset cruise which may have even come with our room as they have lots of different specials going on. Enjoy Tahoe!! ***kim***

The lakeland village beach resort in south lake tahoe has excellent location and rooms in your price range. It is on the beach and walking distance from casinos. I havent been inside but nice from out side. Check Tripadvisor.com and do a "quick Check" of prices. Also cabins are very reasonable, but not on the lake and no view. Many cabins from private owners for your price range. have fun. Don't stay at casino's. Also tahoe beach and ski is good location on beach, rooms small, but clean with kitchens.

We stayed at Lakeland Village with a big group several years ago - in the large condos on the water. We had 4 condos and they were all very nice.
We also enjoy Zephyr Cove resort, which is about 10 minutes north of the Stateline casinos. Zephyr Cove has lake front cabins, some with kitchens, some without. These are more rustic and have the feel of old Tahoe.
