We'll be passing through the Page, AZ, area this summer and wanted to see Upper Antelope Slot Canyon. Is this something that you need a guide for or can you get the gist of it on your own? About how much time would you alot for it?

You need to be guided - they don't people to walk through without a guide. That being said, you don't need to do one of those tours with a company out of Page. If you just show up at the entrance, there is someone there that will drive you in and show you around for a fee. Usually, it's somebody from the native american family that actually owns the land. Last time I went, the lady who drove me in figured out that I had been several times before, and just left me by myself for a couple of hours. The other guides didn't like that, but it worked out great for me.

Lower Antelope is pretty cool, too. It's across the highway from Upper Antelope - I think you can pay a fee that gets you in both. Lower Antelope is unguided and you can stay as long as you like. Upper Antelope has a time limit - I think it's 1-2 hours. Lower Antelope does require some climbing up and down ladders and there are some tight squeezes, but it's a very cool place - less crowded, too.

Upper Antelope Slots canyon is the one you see in most of the pictures.

As lifelist said, you need a guide for the upper slots but not for the lower slots. It takes 1 1/2 hours but you can get longer photography tours. We went with a tour guide out of Page, AZ only because my BIL wanted to go in an airconditioned vehicle. This was good because the tour is limited to 6 people and the tour guide. If you just drive up, you can be stuck in a large group of people for the tour. Each tour operator is given different time slots so that there aren't to many people in the canyon at once.

Once you pay for a tour, this includes the entrance fee which is good at both the upper and lower slots for that day.

We've been to Upper Antelope, and would like to check out Lower Antelope next spring break. (Yeah, I know we plan ahead, but I haven't been to the SW in a few years and I'm itching to get back!)

Would the Lower Antelope be OK with kids - ages 11 and 13? they are active boys.

Lower Canyon would be great for a couple of teenage boys. It's not very strenuous and they'll probably have an easier time squeezing through the narrow passages. Last time I was there, there was a father taking his 8-year old daughter through.
