lake powell tours
Will be staying at Waheap Lodge in June. Curious about tours. What would you recommend as must sees?
-Float Tour on Colorado from Page to Lees Ferry
-Sunset dinner cruise
-rainbow bridge cruise
is 1/2 day enough or do you need full day
-Antelope Canyon
I would suppose it would be too much to do all. We will be staying 2 nights. We are not renting a boat ourselves. Can you swim in the lake near the lodge?
Thanks for your help

Jackie, I think you could fit nearly everything in within a 2 day stay. We visited the dam headquarters, which has a lovely museum. We stayed at Waheap, and, although we didn't swim, I don't know why you couldn't. The water is clear and beautiful. Enjoy. Marie

Take the afternoon boat cruise to Rainbow Bridge, for sure. It starts from and returns to Wahweap. If you decide to explore any of the slot canyons, be particularly careful of the weather. A sudden downpour miles away could be fatal with a flash flood roaring down the slot.

Jackie,
I hope you dont mind me piggybacking on your post, but I would like to inquire further about the boat cruise to rainbow bridge. I have a reservation to take the 1/2 day tour in June, but have some doubts. It seems quite expensive for what is offered and I generally dont enjoy crowded uncomfortable guided tours. Is this trip a tourist trap? Will it be relaxing and comfortable? Will it be overcrowded? I dont have the boating skills to rent my own personal boat. Can one hire a captained motorboat for a private trip to the bridge?
Any help is appreciated.

1/2 day should be plenty for the Rainbow Bridge tour. It is a nice large boat and holds quite a few people. There is a cabin and outer decks and there are usually people all over the deck enjoying the view. I don't know if it is overcrowded or comfortable. I don't think I would call it a tourist trap because Lake Powell is beautiful and consists of many canyons large and small. If you don't take to the water you will miss the best part. Rainbow bridge is down a side canyon and that gives you the experience of seeing how the canyons split off and wind their way into oblivion. Once you get to the dock it is a short walk to view the bridge. All in all I think it would be a really fun trip. You can rent motor boats and personal water craft and tour that way on your own but one word of caution... take a map because it's easy to get lost and fueling marinas are few and far between.
When we go to Lake Powell we always rent a houseboat and tow our jet-skis so I have never actually taken the Rainbow Bridge tour but I have seen the boat many times. (It puts out a monster wake and if you are brave enough to jump it on your jet-ski it's quite a rush!) IMHO the best way to explore Lake Powell is on a Personal Water Craft. You can get places you will never see in a boat and go down the canyons until they get so small you can touch both walls with your outstretched arms and when you look up they are 100-200 feet above your head. It's really an incredible place.
