Lake George or Blue Mountain Lake?

From my previos post, I know that several people think it is a waste to do a daytrip to the Adirondacks from Syracuse. But forsaking all that advice, we would still really like to see at least part of thee Adirondacks. We figure that we can always go back and see more of it when we have more time. Going by Mapquest, the travel times to both Lake George and Blue Mountain Lake are approximately 3 hours and 5 minutes (although Lake George is about 30 miles further). Any recommendations on which would be the best choice?

Blue Mountain - but don't say we didn't warn you about spending the whole day in the car and, subsequently, not really feeling like you got a sense of the Adirondacks. (Course I guess that's true of anyplace you simply drive through.)

Lake George is gross (well, the lake is beautiful, but the surroundings...).

Here is my final suggestion - if you want to really FEEL the Adirondacks drive to Irondequoit Inn on Lake Piseco (I gave you that info in your previous post). Rent kayaks from them and paddle Fall Stream and some of Lake Piseco. (Call them first and make sure they're willing to let you do that as non-guests, otherwise you have to rent in Speculator and launch at the state campgrounds). It's close to Syracuse, really gorgeous, and the Adriondacks is all about paddling (and hiking...).

Then go into Speculator for dinner at Melody Lodge, a true Adirondack lodge.

Blue Mountain Lake for sure! Lake George does not give you a sense of the Adirondacks IMHO. I do not think it is a waste of time as you said you do not mind driving. With that being said it really is worth your time.
I also would agree with the suggestion by wliwl about Piseco Lake / Speculator. Wow! It's been years since I've been there but I can remember how beautiful it was like it was yesterday. There is also a great hiking trail up Piseco Mtn. too if you want to stretch your legs after that long drive. It's not a difficult hike uphill if I recall correctly. This area would give you a feel for the Adirondacks!
If I recall from your original post - no one mentioned driving to Old Forge / Inlet either. Old Forge is only a 2 hour drive from Syracuse and IMO it will give you a feel for the Adirondacks. From Old Forge you could head to Thendera where you can take a very scenic train ride thorough the area. I have not done the train ride but everyone I know who has done it has really enjoyed it. In Old Forge there is also shopping and restaurants. It's touristy but still very pleasant in an Adirondack way. Old Forge has "The Enchanted Forest Water Safari". If you hit some nice hot weather here in Syracuse I would recommend it. It's fun and kids would really like it. I can't remember if you were traveling with children but if not just skip the water park. In Old Forge you can do the Enchanted Forest water theme park and or Thendera train ride /shopping / dining all in one day.
You don't need to drive as far as Blue Mountain to feel the Adirondacks but if you did you would not regret it.
Hope this helps,
Annika
