LA vs. L.A. complaint
People keep posting LA for Los Angeles. I keep opening these post thinking they mean Louisiana. Louisiana is LA. I know about LA, I don't know anything about Los Angeles and I am tired of seeing this mistake.
I may sound grouchy and like a troll but often I just want to quickly give an answer for LA questions and my computor is slow. By the time all go through all the Los Angeles questions my time is finished and I didn't help anyone!
Anyone else know of errors constantly made on the postings that need to be corrected?

I know just what you mean! I HATE that! Another thing I've noticed is a lot of people write "LAX" when what they really mean is "Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles, California." One time I emailed my travel agent--a person obviously much brighter than me--and asked for a ticket from Oshkosh to LA. Damned if she didn't ship me off to Baton Rouge. Boy, was I surprised when I got off the plane...and I missed the Rose Bowl game to boot. And did you ever notice that if you transpose the letters, you get Alabama? Or is it Algiers? Or Absolutely Ludicrous? Once, before I got kicked out of college, I got points taken off on a paper for writing "wierd" instead of "weird." It was only then I realized it's just spelled weird. Weird, huh?

I really don't think this is a big issue for most people. I live in New Orleans (I'll take the stinky river over the "City of Angels" anyday, Ron!) but I always assume "LA" means Los Angeles. If people really want to refer to Louisiana, it's easy enough to make it "La." or just spell it out. Besides, most posts about Louisiana are about New Orleans and "NO" can't be confused with many other places!

This isn't really the same thing, but I did have Northwest Airlines check my luggage last year for London, UK when I was flying to London, Ontario! Luckily, I noticed the tags on my ticket jacket before the flight took off and they were able to switch the bag tags.

Can you imagine my surprise when I found out that the prize we won wasn't to Paris ,FRANCE but rather to Paris , TEXAS. We weren't dressed right at all. At first I thought it was just that my high school french was like real rusty and that's why people kept looking funny at us. Talk about being surprised and embaressed. Mon Dieu!

Dear Confused,
Los Angeles has been called LA long before the Federal Government established 2 letter abbreviations for each State for the benefit of the US Postal Service.
More tourists visit LA than the entire State of Louisiana in any given year, so you can bet that message titles on this website refer to LA, the city, rather than Lousiana.
Trust me on this.

Yeah, and while we're at it, when I see a car sticker with "LA" on it in Cal. (Alto California, not Baja California nor Baja California Sur nor Caledonia) I assume they're from Los Alamitos, over there by the Navy (US) weapons depot. See, everybody has stickers on their cars with 2 or 3 letters indicating they're from HB (Hermosa? Huntington? Beach?) or SJC (San Juan Capistrano, not the San Jose (Calif., not Costa Rica) airport, or some such. Man, is that confusing. Does "La" also stand for Latvia? And if I have my bags tagged for Cairo will they end up in Illinois? And WHY is that river called the Mississippi when it actually ends up in LA, along with Bologna Creek (oh, god, there's another source of confusion...)

Okay, "Believe It", I challenge you. Prove to me that more people visit Los Angeles than the entire state of Louisiana. New Orleans is a popular destination and the state's casinos are frequented (often) by Texans. I'd love to see your numbers and the source. I don't doubt what you say but, as they say in Missouri, SHOW ME!

how many people visit LoAn (does that help any?) a year?
do you even take into consideration that new orleans *alone* is one of the most popular tourist attractions? and i'm not just talking about mardi gras. add in, with mardi gras, jazz fest, essence fest and the sugar bowl...and that's just new orleans!

John, there are PLENTY of professional organizations that keep tallies on where most Americans travel to, and I hate to tell you, but Louisiana is WAY DOWN on the list compared to Los Angeles (and certainly the rest of the GORGEOUS state of California!)!!!
