LA for a day

Going to layover in LA for a day on my way to Hawaii. Arrive from Miami at 10:30 a.m. Staying at airport hotel and will not have rental car. Looking for advice on sights, restaurants, activities near LAX. Thanks for your help!

I would hop the citybus to the Getty Center, a true L.A. experience that's not-to-be-missed. From the LAX transit center it's only one bus...it'll take over an hour just to get there but you'll also get a little tour of the area north of LAX, West Los Angeles and the UCLA area. Get a $3 all-day bus pass and you can hop on and off wherever you like. The cafe at the Getty is fine, but you might want to dine in the Westwood neighborhood near LAX.

Thanks. The Getty Center does look interesting, but after spending 5 hours on a plane I'm probably not going to want to hop on a bus for an hour. I was hoping there was an area near the airport where I could stretch my legs a little.

Hi t-bug: We're doing the same thing en route to Tahiti in November. I had posted a similar question here and on FlyerTalk, got some very helpful answers. Seems Marina del Rey and Manhattan Beach or Santa Monica are all pretty close to LAX, and allow walks on the beach, nice places to eat. Consensus (mostly) said short-term car rental is the easiest solution to getting around in a limited time frame.

Try an archive search for LAX -- the thread should come up. Or click my screen name, it will be on the list.

If you are hoping to be able to literally "walk" around LAX you may be disappointed. I would definitely rent a car or try to figure out the public transportation. All of the suggestions above would be great day trips. Santa Monica has the 3rd Street Promenade which is fun- shopping, food, street performers, etc. but you definitely could not walk there (or anywhere really) from LAX

Take a cab to Venice Beach and walk up the beach to Santa Monica... its a couple of miles, but it gives you the ocean and plenty of people watching... once in SM, check out the Prominade for some last minute shopping or some good food... The airport is a quick cab ride back from any of the hotels along the way... remember to dress for the beach walk and dont forget the sunscreen!

Thanks. A short cab ride somewhere where we can walk around and relax for a while is exactly what I'm looking for. I'm reluctant to rent a car because I have an early morning departure and don't want to deal with returning it.

You might check out the Foghorn Hotel, I believe they will shuttle you from the airport and they are located right by the water in Marina Del Rey. Walking distance to restaurants, bus stop, shuttle stops. A short 10 min ride back to LAX.
