LA Cali for 3 days alone, What To Do?

I'm heading to Cali alone for a one day conference so I'm making a trip out of it. I am in my early 40s and love to have a good time. I'm very adventurous and wanted to get out of my city.

I know one of the things I want to do is the TMZ Celebrity Tour. But what else can I do without cramming? I also love a good bargain and to shop.

I'm planning on staying near downtown or chinatown.

Here's my report for a lengthy trip taken in Los Angeles earlier this year:

With three days, you'll only scratch the surface of what the city has to offer. But you'll at least get some ideas.

One piece of advice to offer is not to cram too much into a day unless everything is close by each other (downtown, for instance). LA is a sprawling place.

One thing NOT to do is to call the state "Cali". You'll be called a rube and laughed at.

Ditto bedar, please no "Cali", it is like nails on a blackboard to many of us who live here.
Why downtown? It is not real central (we do not have a central spot, being too spread out). The TMZ tour leaves from The Grove and the Chinese Theater neither of which are downtown.
Depending on your budget and time of year, look into staying in Santa Monica or Hollywood. West Hollywood is also a possible place although public transit is not as good there. Will you have a car?
Things to do depends on your interests, such as museums (Getty Center and Getty Villa, LACMA) Huntington Library and Gardens, Griffith Park and Observatory, studio tour (Warner Bros is the most popular due to more frequency)etc.

If you go to the The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens (and you really should), there is a Caliburger nearby

Here's some info on the Huntington, one of my favorite museums in the world. We just went again last week, but I don't have pics up on that trip yet.

Will you have a car? It's recommended in L.A.

Don't stay downtown or near Chinatown. What is your budget?

As my itinerary link above shows, you can indeed get around LA fine without a car if you plan it ahead of time and stay somewhere near a metro stop.

And I see no reason not to stay in Downtown or Chinatown if you want, especially if you choose to go car-less.

TMZ tour..hit up Santa Monica pier..go to eat at famous Jay's in Santa Monica.. Lots of celebs..
Hit up Melrose avenue to thrift shop and shop eclectic stores..
Joan's on third is great.
And please do NOT call it Cali!!

Getty is gorgeous but sounds like you want celeb watching..

They are everywhere...especially at the Grove and love Grand Central Market downtown...Olvera street too...great food, drink and vibe.

If you vacation here don't embarrass yourself by calling CA, Ca, Calif, California - Cali.

People will know you are a "fureiner" !

Everyone is a foreigner in LA

Downtown is fine. I stayed at the Freehand, and that was a lot of fun. I only stayed downtown because I had no car, though. I prefer Santa Monica if you have one.

Huntington Gardens is really cool but I found out that it is one of those places that would be so much easier to access with a car.

You could bike from SM to Venice, or go to LACMA, or out to Griffith Park.

I'm no uber fan, but if you are, that'll probably be a lot easier than transit.

...and I hate the term "my bad" but what can I do other than moan and groan about it? (And if I'd been moaning and groaning about it on a travel board for 20 years I think I'd give up and move on.)

Rather than leave, I think I like having a little something of no consequence to moan & groan about - lets off steam and saves me from saying things that would get me thrown off.

"My bad" seems about as sincere as replying "whatever". Meaningless and, I suspect, meant to annoy.

"No problem" is a bit annoying, what ever happened to "You're welcome"?

Calif Life is probably some company of misfits who don't know any better.

We see t-shirts like that (with Cali written on them) and we immediately know they are a turista. We mere think pobrecito!
