Kitty Hawk in April?

We've never been to OBX and are interested in the Kitty Hawk area. Spring Break is our next opportunity for a visit which will be in late Mar - early Apr. I see that the Wright Bros Memorial is open year round. What's the activity level in Apr compared to the summer months? Are there places that are open just during the summer months? Thanks in advance!

There are some place that are not open in April, but in general most things will be open. The water will be WAY too cold for swimming...and the weather could be truly horrible...or the weather might be very nice.

We go down in May a lot (and have been for well over 35 years) and, to be honest, we hit some terrible weather. We've been down there in three tornadoes, numerous high wind weeks, thunderstorms, cold, you name it. Occasionally we luck out and hit beautiful, summer-like weather. So it's a risk. I go down mostly to bird watch so May is a good time, but beach time can be iffy.

On the other hand, no crowds is REALLY nice.

We went down there for Spring Break a few years ago (early April) and loved the fact that there were no crowds! We visited the Kitty Hawk memorial and had the place virtually to ourselves. We took a hang-gliding class and we (4) were the only ones in the class, so it ended up being a private lesson for our family. We walked along the beach and had a great time.

April is a great time to go if you don't mind not being able to enjoy the water - there are some things that will be closed and are considered seasonal but Kitty Hawk, Jockey's Ridge, etc. will be open; the play "The Lost Colony" at Manteo will not be open; however, the NC Aquarium at Manteo will be open. - I would highly recommend you stay at Avon which is part way between Kitty Hawk and Hatteras - you'll definitely want to visit the lighthouses, Cape Hatteras, Bodie, and take the free ferry over to Ocracoke Island. Should also be a great time for surf fishing at Cape Point if any of your family members are into fishing - our family has been going to OBX for over 40 yrs. - we go in April and Nov. just for the fishing. We also enjoy taking a day trip up to Corolla to look for the wild ponies - we have 4WD so we take the beach access all the way to the VA line - really interesting to see the village of Corova (accessible only by 4WD) - no paved roads, only sand but some very impressive homes out on the northern end. Rental rates are great during this time of year too.
