Kilauea Lodge/Big Island

Thinking of staying there 2 nights in between Maui and Kauai on July 2002 honeymoon. Has anyone stayed there? Any opinions btwn the Honeymoon Deluxe Room, Tutu's Place and Pi'i Mauna House. They all look so cute - I'm not sure which to go with. Think I'm leaning toward Tutu's Place to have a cute cottage with a kitchen.

I haven't stayed there but my wife and I ate at the restaurant there last month. It was excellent but not inexpensive.

We stayed at The Inn at Volcano about 1 mile from Kilauea Lodge and Volcano NP. The Inn was incredible... beautiful grounds and rooms, excellent gourmet breakfast, very nice and attentive staff. We stayed in the Continental Lace suite... very nice. Their website: http://www.volcano-hawaii.com/gold-w...ano-hawaii.htm

I would stay at the Volcano house inside the park. The volcano at night is the most tremendous and moving thing you can view on the big island. Any location outside the park will take you 30-40 minutes driving. You will want to make two night trips to the park if there is a good flow on your trip, has been on all of my trips. I lived on Oahu so I had more trips than I remember. Also at the volcano house you have nice views of a very wide crater (1mile if memory serves). There are also other outdoor sites related to volcanic activity other than the volcano inside the park. With only two days on your trip I would stay central to the park.

Hmmm.... I think that Sarah may be misleading you. All of the places mentioned here are in Volcano Village, a five minute drive up to the park. I'm not sure what the advantage would be to staying at Volcano House. It's in an interesting spot, sitting above Hale Mau'mau Crater (which steams but hasn't shot up any lava in recent history) but has little charm. It also reeks of the buffet line that awaits bus tour after bus tour that visits Volcano House. The options that you mention are far more charming and the restaurant at Kilauea Lodge is one of the best on the island. Also, it is a drive from any accommodations up on the Volcano to watch the lava flow at night.

I had the same experience as Sarah and would only stay in the park when given the alternative. There is a considerable drive once you are in the park most guide books I recall consulting have suggested staying inside the park. I would ask inns the distance time between lodging and lava flow (not volcano). Remember you want answers in terms of minutes not miles, winding roads can cost you more time than actual miles. Enjoy and good luck.

The Inn at Volcano (Chalet Kilauea) that I recommended is about a 4 min drive from the park entrance. Kilauea Lodge is about 2 min from the park entrance. Volcano House is inside the park about 2 min from the entrance. All of these places are very close to each other. The active lava was hitting the ocean (in early October) at the end of Rt 130, about a 45 min drive from any of them.

We just returned from there and stayed at Carson's Volcano Cottages (B & B). They are adorable and located in the middle of the rain forest....loved all the birds singing. It was only about 2 minutes to the entrance of the park. We only stayed for 1 night (which was perfect for us) Unless you plan on doing lots of hiking, one day and one night should be plenty of time. The cottages, the owners etc. were really wonderful and we felt like we were staying in a tree house but we were ready to get back to the warmer Kona side of the island. They're offering great specials right now and we only paid something like $80. which included breakfast. They have their own website too if you want to see photos.

Good morning,

We stayed at Kilauea Lodge in August. It was great! A good breakfast was also included. I probably would not go for a kitchen while on vacation. Who wants to cook? It was nice to be able to leave the window open at night a hear the rain. We stayed in the Hale Aloha building and it was nice. Our room was huge with fresh flowers.

It was great to be so close to the Park. I agree with the person about not staying at the Volcano House in the Park. It seemed OK but not interesting enought to stay there. Stop for a visit there to see the volcano crater from the building. You can't see the lava flow from there.

The lodge also has excellent food but expensive. There is a good Indian restaurant in Vocano village also.

Aloha & Congrats!

We stayed at the Kilauea Lodge for 2 nights during Valentines weekend awhile back and LOVED IT! We stayed in the older building which was quite nice also. It was an incredibly romantic stay (and a bargain at less than $150 a night!). The mist and chill in the mountain air made the cozy fireplaces all the more welcome. We dined 2 nights at the lodge restaurant which was excellent. The ambiance is of charming vintage hawaii. Highly recommend taking the chain of craters road at night down to the ocean to view the most stars you'll ever see and watch the lava flow at a distance. Truly romantic! Have a great time.

I stayed at the Kilauea Lodge on my honeymoon this past September and loved it. We stayed in the Hale Maluna and paid 135/night. The room was a bit small, we had just come from the Hyatt Kauai, so anything would seem small then! I had requested the honeymoon suite but it was booked. This was my second choice because of the fireplace, which they stocked every night. We ate our first night there. The food was wonderful, and prices were moderate.
The hotel was literally five minutes from the volcano park. You cannot see the lava from this park. You must go to the lava viewing area about 35 minutes away. We spent the day in the park and then went to the viewing area just before sunset. The lodge will give you flashlights-just make sure the batteries are good!
If I had to do it over I would have stayed in a B&B in Hilo-like the Spouting Horn. It just seemed like a better location for the viewing park. But, if you want to spend a lot of time hiking in the park, than Volcano is a good choice.
If you want to see my trip report, do a back search with Tracey as the text search, it’s under trip report 1 & 2.
Have a great time!

TTT - Has anyone ever stayed at the Pi'i Mauna House at Kilauea Lodge? We are planning to spend one night in Volcano in October and have a large group (6 adults). The Pi'i Mauna House looks promising...especially the hot tub! Any recommendations?

Are upper level rooms of Hale Aloha Building at the Kilauea Lodge better than the ones on ground level?
