I flew my 12 yr old daughter home from Birmingham on Southwest a couple weeks ago. They were lovely. However, when she arrived in Louisville, her grandmother wasn't at the gate because she couldn't get through security with her 2 replaced knees. She forgot the doctor's note. I swear on a bible this is true, lol. My daughter went to the info booth, paged her and waited there.

Airtran also allows children to fly solo, although, as with other airlines, depending on their age, they are only allowed to fly on direct flights.

Our granddaughter is 6. The first time she came to see us, she flew round trip with her mother. The next time, we drove to pick her up and flew her back to her mom (we figured she would be less nervous if she knew she was going home). We just recently flew her round trip.

She flies in and out of Atlanta, direct to Newport News, VA. The airline required that we provide complete contact info regarding the person dropping her off and the person picking her up. You are actually REQUIIRED to go to the gate and wait until the plane has taken off.

Although the airlines usually only take the info for one person to go to the gate, my husband and I have never had any problems getting escort passes to go to the gate together. They bring the kids off last and keep them together and one by one match the children up with the person who is there and authorized to pick them up.
