If you like the ‘action’ you are going to have to pay to stay in the ‘action’. Not necessarily a bad thing though. A block or two off the main drag is somewhat cheaper but as that is not what you asked for here, I won’t give any suggestions. We have stayed both in the action and a block away, love staying at the Hyatt for the action. Not sure of the prices currently but quite pricey each time we stayed there and when we go to Key West again we will certainly look into staying at the Hyatt again.

Hi. One tip about Key West - the distance from Miami isn't big but there are always traffic jams because the roads are narrow. Last time it took me 5 hours to get to the end from Miami and it wasn't a holiday. There is possibility to get by a samll airplane and it costs not too much, next time I would do like that.
