Lori, you're going to have a great time. My wife and I make it down to KW once a year (Late Sept. is the best time)
You'll have to do the obligatory Duval St. walk. Most people don't care for it, but if you're in the right frame of mind it can be quite fun. My wife and I personally like Hog's Breath for the live music. Capt. Tony's and the Green Parrot are great, as is Schooner's Wharf.
Eat at Blue Heaven at least once. Great food and a little quirky (like most of KW itself) Kelly's Brewery is a block off of Duval. If you're into good beer, they brew their own. I like their stout when they brew it. They have great food and beautiful outside dining (Try their rumrunner. The best I've ever had) Louie's Backyard has good food and is on the water on the south side of the island. The view is fantastic.
Make sure you walk through the neighborhood away from Duval St. The architecture is beautiful and you get a better feel for what KW is about. Walk through the cemetary. It's always a highlight for everyone that does. They have a ghost tour that goes through there at night, pretty good.
Of course, make sure you do some snorkeling, or scuba if you're qualified. We usually like to do that on the Key just north of KW (Big Pine Key) or go to Bahia Honda State Park for the beach and also snorkeling trips to Looie Key Reef. Bahia Honda is by far the best beach in the Keys. KW doesn't have great beaches, but the best is at Fort Zachary Taylor.
Please feel free to e-mail me for more info. We can answer more specific questions. We're going back down in a few weeks. Can't wait.

Went to Key West for the first time two weeks ago and loved it!! Can't wait to go back.
Things to see and do:
- Conch Train Tour (you get a real feel for the island)
- Sunsets at Mallory Square
- Duval Square (bars, resturants, shops)
- Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Resturant ("Cheeseburger in Paradise")
- Sunset Key (Hiltons private island. It costs $5-10 to take a feey to the island. They have a beautiful beach and a great resturant called Latitudes.)
- Blue Heaven (great resturant for breakfast)
- We stayed at the Hilton (great hotel but expensive)
- La Concha Hotel (great view from the roof)
Key West is just great! You will have a great time! Everyone is so friendly and helpful and it is so relaxing.
Have fun!

I also think you'd do well to search this site for more information. The Conch Train Tour is a perfect way to begin a vacation in Key West. It provides a history and overview of the island that will give you an idea about things you might want to further investigate. By all means, go to a sunset celebration at Mallory Square. I'm not as enthusiastic about Sunset Key. When my husband and I were there, the ferry was free for those who had reservations at Latitudes. Our food was great, but since that time it's gotten very spotty reviews. Same holds true of Louie's Backyard. It has unquestionably the prettiest view and atmosphere in Key West, but the food is expensive and sometimes disappointing. Go there for lunch and enjoy the view, or go for cocktails and have dinner somewhere else. If you're interested in snorkeling, try Floridays...they dock at the Hyatt.
