Key West Camping Suggestions??

Does anyone have any campsites that they would recommend in Key West for tent camping?

No suggestions in Key West but I saw in the paper today that the campsites at the Dry Tortugas have re-opened.

Try this web site for camping info: www.clydeskeywest.com Click on camping link.
Jabour's appears to be the only campground on KW itself. On adjacent Stock Island are Leo's Camps and Boyd's Campground.

Which paper - I've been trying to get info as we visited last year via seaplane and would like to spend one or two nights out there over Easter.

The National Park Service website still lists the Dry Tortugas campsite as being closed. But it is possible the site just hasn't been updated. The camp's phone number is 305-242-7700.

My suggestion would be to camp at the Quality Inn right as you enter Key West.

In all seriousness, when I went with a large group of people to Islamorada, some camped, some stayed at the Key Lantern and some stayed on a boat. We had the cheapest deal per person at the Key Lantern. The campsite was costing $40 per night and the boat slip around $100. If you are camping to save money, you may be better off with priceline.

One last thing, anytime May through mid October, it is too hot, humid, and sticky to camp.

I saw the Tortugas article in the Miami Herald. You may want to call the park service to see if you can book your spot!

Big Pine Island (or is it Big Pine Key?) -- the place was called Big Pine Island Fishing Lodge, I believe. I camped there on a little spit on the ocean -- it was gorgeous. You can take the boat that leaves from there to Looe Key to go snorkling in the prettiest spot in the entire ocean.

The problem with the Dry Tortugas is that's all there is -- the island with a large brick fort. You take a small seaplane there from Key West. I suggest doing it for a there-and-back one day trip. It's quite an experience, for sure, especially the flight hovering over the sea watching the marine life swimming (read that sharks!). I had a bad jelly-fish experience but that's to be expected when you are in such a beautiful natural habitat.
