Key Largo to Key West & back again ~ touring plan advice needed.

We have somewhat of a "game plan" for April 2004, but I just thought maybe some Keys experts out there may offer up some advice.
Our plan includes arriving in Islamorada before noon. We have reservations for the Hampton Inn for 3 nights. We want to spend time at Pennecamp, Bahia Honda & possibly do a snorkel trip to Looe Key.
We also want to spend a night in Key West - thinking of the Southernmost Motel. Our question: should we just stay 2 nights in Islamorada, head to Key West for one, and then next day head north again? This would leave us one night left. We'll have 4 nights to spend on the Keys.
With our plan of 3 nights in Islamorada, it seems like it's a lot of driving back and forth. Is this inevitable?
How do other people tour the Keys???

It might be better to have Marathon as a base camp and go out from there....but I would suggest that you just stay in the place that you are at...starting in Islamodora and moving down the Keys to Key West.

One night in Key West is not enough

Suggest you research KW restaurants - much posted in the past two months. And yes, one night is not enough!!!!

I'm very partial to Key West, so I'd spend at least two nights there.

I love the Keys but don't like long drives. Take that bias into account with these suggestions. Think about stopping at Pennekamp (MM 104) on the way to Islamorada (MM 80). I like the snorkel boat at Pennekamp. You can also rent kayaks or canoes there.
I like the idea of 2 nights in Key West. I'd hit Bahia Honda (MM 37) and Looe Key (Boats leave from MM 29) as part of the drive to Key West or as a trip from Key West.
The Key Deer Refuge (in which you indicated interest in another post) isn't really worth a stop. You are unlikely to see any deer.
Plan on stopping at Robbies (MM 77) to feed the wild tarpon.
Mangrove Mikes (mm 82) is good for breakfast. If you want a nice dinner, I prefer Morada Bay (MM 81.5) or Pierres over Mile Marker 88. Even if you don't have dinner there, go to Morada Bay before sunset, get a drink, sit in the chairs on the beach and enjoy the view. They usually have live music on the weekends. Whatever you end up doing, you'll have fun! Enjoy!

Is it early in April? If so, you may have to contend with spring breakers in Key West (unless you are spring breakers yourselves).

Thanks to you all for the responses!

I've ordered the Joy William's book of the Florida Keys to further reference.

We're fairly certain we'll only stay one night in Key West. Now, I just need to choose accomodations. Still considering the Southermost Hotel ($179.00 & a long walk to Mallory Square). I'm looking into B&B's that accept kids & also one night stays. The Island City House and Center Court fit the bill at about $239.00 for the night.

We'll be there the second week of April, yes, I guess you could consider us "Spring breakers" although we're a family w/2 teen sons.
Thanks again to all who have contributed input to my questions about the Keys. I've printed out all your advice!
