ketchikan

We will be spending a day in Ketchikan in August. Has anyone visited the Saxman Native Village? Do you need to take a tour or can you walk there from town? Any comments? Entrance fee? thank you

It is not self guided and is best seen with a guide. You can get cheap tours from the dock visitor center, but they do not include the dancers or getting into the carver's shed.

Saxman Village is well worth the visit, but is not within walking distance. Some of the tours include the visit to the lodge and dancing as well as the totem wood carving. They have an exceptionally nice gift shop with native items at a reasonable price too.

We just got back from Ketchikan. Loved it! We visited Saxman and the other totem pole park as well. They were both very worthwhile. The second one had a more interesting/natural setting. We did have access to a car and drove to both.
