kenai fjords alaska

After saving for fifteen years my husband and myself will be in seward alaska June 28-july 3 our itinerary is as follows (our main goal of the trip is fishing and humpback whale watching): day 1-2 overnight at fox island and northwestern fjords boat tour, day3 fishing with atlantic coastal explorer, day 4 open for suggestions
day 5 captains choice boat tour (major marine i think) day 5 exit glacier guided walk on ice tour. My question is we want to sea kayak but are undecided about kayaking in aialik bay (we will already be there on the boat) or caines head, around fox island, etc??? My fear is if I don't see humpback whales I will regret going to aialik for one more chance but then again I don't want to pay the expense if its going to be same view different day. Also how is the hiking on fox island? WE thought about doing kayak while there but opted to hike around island for free. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Note: we have never been in a sea kayak but we are adventurous people

surprised this needs topping - We did the longest Kenai Fjords trip about the same time of year as your trip will be. Although we only saw one pair of humpbacks, we saw several groups of orcas. I think the boats keep in touch with each other so if there's a sighting, they make an effort to get to the area. When you drive from Anchorage south to Seward, if it's high tide you might have a chance of seeing whales in the bay. Google info for Beluga Point.

I think you'll get more responses if you go to www.tripadvisor.com,put in alaska and then forums.

There are several locals from that area that might better be able to answer your question.

Have a wonderful trip!

I would definatly Kayak around Aialik Bay if possible. This is something we didn't do. We did Kayak around Ressurection Bay for 4 hours on Midnight Sun Tour. I think being in a boat by yourself hearing and seeing the glaciers calve would be the highlight of the trip. We did see 3 Humpbacks on our tour last year. We were there the last of June and 1st of July just like you are. Also, do you know about the big race held in Seward on the 3rd of July each year. Check it out. When you go to Exit Glacier TAKE BEAR SPRAY. I would say you have at least 50% chance of seeing one. It sounds like you are taking 3 different boat excursions. I guess nothing is for sure, but I would be suprised if you didn't see some humpy's. The whales we saw didn't breech. We did see one with a baby. We used www.kayakak.com for our seakayaking. I would have done the glacier kayaking, but didn't have the time. We were only in Seward for a couple of days. You might consider dogsledding on Godwin Glacier. Heck you can even spend the night there. Sealife Center is worth seeing. Allow 1-3 hours for that. Seakayaking wasn't scary at all. We were in calm seas.

Thank you for your suggestions. Hopefully I can make up my mind in a couple of days.
