Kaui or Maui

My sister and her future husband will be honeymooning in Hawaii in Sept. They are trying to decide whether to go to Kaui or Maui. My husband and I just went to Maui this past Oct. for our honeymoon, so they saw lots of pictures from our trip. They are a very outdoorsy, athletic couple, but their budget is a little bit tighter than ours was. Can you give pros and cons of each place to help them figure out which would be better for them? And if Kaui is suggested over Maui, where would it be suggested to stay? If they went to Maui, they more than likely would stay in Wailea. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Since they enjoy outdoors Kauai could be a good option, don’t get me wrong there is a lot of nice places to hike in Maui but, since they already saw your pictures it may be nice they did something different. September is a great month and last two times I visited Kauai was that time of the year, I stayed in Hanalei both times and it was wonderful, everyone says it rains more in the North Shore (Princeville, Hanalei) so someone here am sure can suggest saying in the South, or as I have read here a lot of people split their times. You may suggest they buy the Revealed book for either island they decide to visit and it can give them a better perspective (if they decide to go to Kauai) You mentioned them staying in Wailea if they go to Maui, if am not mistaken Wailea is more expensive then Kaanapali you may want to look into that too, or perhaps they can plug in their dates in the two different islands and find out which makes more of a financial sense to them. Either way they will be in Hawaii and you can’t go wrong there! Good luck, congratulations on their upcoming weeding. Hope this helps.

Maui would be my choice.

Lots of info. Ignore the Oahu things. There are lots of websites good for all islands:

Depends on what else they like to do. You can do outdoorsy things on both islands, from the mountains to the ocean and everything in between.

IMHO, Maui seems more expensive to me than Kauai. You can do things cheaply on both islands, but for some reason I have a harder time finding cheaper stuff on Maui! (I used to fly to both islands once a month for work.)

The drawback, however, is that Maui has a lot of available nightlife if they decide to go out on the town. Kauai does not have nightlife. But if they find that kind of thing charming, then no problem! Then again, they could go to Maui and spend a day or two in Hana to get that rural feel.

All the islands are scenic, just in different ways.

We went to Maui for our honeymoon and loved it. The next year we went to Kauai, and I think we loved it even more. Although Maui was stunning, the beauty of the Na Pali coast is honestly one of the most gorgeous places I've ever seen. Also, Maui seemed to be the most expensive of all the islands to us; we had a much easier time finding affordable meals, etc. on Kauai. Since you say they are outdoorsy and on a budget, I'd lean towards Kauai.

Maui mo'bettah. South Kihei or Wailea/Makena is where I would stay.

Maui IS more expensive, especially the Kihei/Wailea area. Kauai is less touristy and more geared to outdoor stuff, in my opinion. And very beautiful. We stayed on the East Coast of Kauai, a little north of Poipu beach. Princeville/Hanalei is the pricey area of the island. Poipu is a nice, calm beach, good for relaxing.
