April is likely to be better, July and August are peak season.

(The spelling is Kauai.)

If the time frame in April is the week before or after Easter Sunday the fares will probably be about the same in each time period.

October-November are usually the cheapest months.

I think July & August are likely to be more expensive, as it is summer vacation time. As if anyone can afford to take their family to Hawaii nowadays.

I'm not sure you will find any great fares any longer. There is supposed to be a 25% reduction in flights to Hawaii starting in October 08. I've been looking for flights in early Sept and they are running at least $700 per person.

If you can fly mid-week, you may be able to find a better rate.

As recently as May 26, I had found under $300 round-trip between LAX and HNL. It was a 12-hour fare sale on UA, NW, and CO. It was valid for late August travel. I know it worked because I booked it myself (albeit in the other direction).

Air deals are still out their but their nature has changed completely, and they are very short-lived. You won't find them on travel newsletters or in newspapers. You will only find them online and by vigilant daily monitoring of sites that track them.

Don't give up hope. More deals will be forthcoming.

Thanks to all your replies.

BeatofHawaii: we won't give up.

Marginal: we already reserved our vacation unit at the Marriott (room with oceanfront view). We own it and daughter will use it with her family (4 of them).
