Kauai-Na Pali Coast Suggestions/Tips/Info?
My husband, 9 yr old son and I are going to be in Kauai next week.
We would love to do one of the Na Pali coast boat tours (sunset?).
My husband gets seasick on large cruise ships if the waves are too choppy-even with dramamine.
Any suggestions? Is the water too choppy for this type of trip for him? I'd hate to spend big-bucks for this adventure and have him be sick the whole time.
Any help is appreciated.

The water is usually calmer in the morning so you may want to consider taking an early cruise. We have been out with Kauai Sea Tours many times and they are very professional and friendly.
We normally do the sunset cruise in early April and it can be a bit choppy.
How is he with flying? You may want to consider a helicopter (Inter Island) or plane flight (Wings over Kauai).

If he gets sick even with Dramamine, you might want to pick something else. It can get very rough, especially on the way back. My BIL thought he would be tough and not take any meds, and thru the trip he ended up feeding the fishes. :-&

I have the same kind of sea-legs and so I'm afraid I'd skip, except:
It isn't very busy here on Kauai right now. So, if the winds are very calm and you check the surf forecast (http://www.kauaiexplorer.com/ocean_report/) and it is really flat, then I'd consider a last minute (not pre-reserved) boat tour.
Otherwise, either a helicopter tour, if you are so inclined, or drive to the Koke'e lookout beyond Waimea canyon.
Have fun.

Thanks for the suggestions... I will definately check into the "surf report" and see if it looks good for a last minute trip to the coast.
He's not good with planes/helicopters either-so the heli-tour would be just as "bad" for him...
As an alternate-we may do a short morning tour, if the water looks calm... THANKS!

We did a sunset sail with Captain Andy's, and it was really fun. Very choppy coming back in though. Not for the faint of heart. The woman next to me was pregnant, and she looked green the entire time and had to lay down for most of the trip back.

i thought they didn't allow pregnant women on these tours.
mn - the water is usually very choppy later in the day. agree with taking an early tour. enjoy your trip.

kauai, she wasn't visibly pregnant, but when I asked her if she was okay, she told me she never should have gotten on the boat because she was pregnant. She looked fine until we started the trip back and the water got so rough.

These boat rides are very popular, but I would never go out again after a NaPali/Nihau trip with Hohoholo in 2003. It was fun and great until the trip back. The waves were huge and it was like being on a 2 hour long roller coaster ride made even worse because of the pounding. Most of the people on the boat were getting sick. It was a morning trip and we went in July.

iamg,
I've had the same experience. That's why I wouldn't book in advance and would only go based on the current weather conditions, based on what you see, and on 1) NOAA weather (http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick...2=-159.584&e=0) and (as I'd previously mentioned) the surf report (http://www.kauaiexplorer.com/ocean_report/).
