Kauai hotels

I am going to Kauai May 27-June 1 with my signifcant other and we are on the fence regarding a hotel in the Poipu area. We figure we will want to spend 60-70% of our time around the pool/beach/water so we place a premium on those amenities/facilities for our accomodations. The Hyatt looks lovely in regards to pool and grounds (not a big deal we can't swim at the beach, walking is fine) my big question is the extra bucks for the Hyatt worth it overall? We are also looking at the Sheraton in Poipu - nice beach location, a very reasonable rate for an ocean view room, but I have heard the pool area is not so nice? Both properties are offering good deals for a free night and/or meals included. Any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated!

The Hyatt and the Sheraton are not in the same league. The Sheraton's pool area is what I call "plain jane".

The Hyatt is known for its extravagant property, while the Sheraton has a better swimming & snorkeling beach location. If the pool is more important to you than the beach, then the Hyatt is better suited for you.

It really is an easy choice & I agree with globetrotter. The grounds and the pools of the Hyatt are fabulous - you'll probably never want to leave. The Sheraton is nothing special but the beach is gorgeous and the reason I go to Hawaii.

Do you want pools or beach?

sf..nailed it..nothing special but the Grand Hyatt is a lovely property..
Check out the Kauai Marriott Beach resort or the Marriott vacation club..really nice place..and you can get a 1 bdr or 2 bdr villa which are nice, oceanfront and lots of room too.

Have a wonderful time!

We stayed at the Marriot Waiohai on Poipu Beach in summer 2007 and loved it. The condos are great (I always opt for a condo over a hotel on this type of vacation) although the common areas inside the buildings are very plain, the grounds are gorgeous, the beach is really nice, as is the pool area. Not as "grand" as the Hyatt, but really nice. The 'travelers photos' on TripAdvisor are very accurate. If you do go, be sure to get an oceanfront or oceanview room, but understand that in their lingo, oceanview is everything that faces in the direction of the ocean (rather than the parking lot, which is called 'garden view').

Wow sf...that looks so much nicer than the vacation club in Lihue!
Maybe I should look into the Waiohai..
I so prefer the condo then the hotel anyday..
You do have to watch the lingo when they saw oceanview..as long as its pointed in that direction they can get away with that kind of stuff..
Did you do a trip report for you latest trip to Hawaii?
Hope you had a wonderful time and sorry we kicked your butts last night..go Pad's..

Ha - we kicked our own butts

I did do a trip report of sorts (this trip was only Oahu, we were in Kauai and Maui last in summer '07). http://tinyurl.com/pkp657

I would look at the new Koa Kea. It is right between Kiahuna and the Waiohai. They are marketing it as an upscale boutique property. Looks nice. Close to both Poipu and the Sheraton Beach. It is built on what used to be the Poipu Beach Hotel pre Iniki.

Note that the Koa Kea is squeezed in between the Marriott Waiohai and Kiahuna Plantation. I don't think the pool can possibly overlook the ocean (they all share the same beach, however.

We are at the Waiohai now in an oceanview, ahem, full public parking lot glimpse of the ocean room! The condo is super. The grounds are gorgeous.

The pool at the Marriott Kauai is awesome!

ksucat, you sound like the real icee! I don't think he thinks they serve anything other than ahi!

Hey icee, what building are you in? I didn't think you could look at the parking lot and the ocean (even a sliver) at the same time.
