Kancamagus Highway NH in winter A question
Hi
just a quick question form a couple of Brits.
We are flying into Boston in Feb and will be drving up to the White mountains region, The guidebooks we have read rave about the Kancamagus (sp?) highway and its views and we really wanted to drive it, however is it open in winter? (The guidebooks don't say but mention some roads are closed in winter)and if so what are the road conditions like? If it helps we will be hireing a 4x4 vehicle.
Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question be we have never visited this areas before.

Steve, The Kancamagus is kept open all year. Just realize that a severe storm can hit this time of year that could make driving tricky - a 4x4 is not a bad idea. The state of New Hampshire has excellent road maintenance in the winter however. This is a beautiful road to drive, but there are many other very scenic spots in the White Mountains. Do try some cross country skiing or snowshoeing. Be prepared for some very cold weather!

I agree that it is a beautiful drive any time of the year. Just drive slowly and make sure you will make this trip during a day. Also be careful about a black ice.
Have a great time Steve and Sarah. There is so much to do in the White Mountains.
We always stay in the White Mountain Hotel where one will find an outdoor swimming pool open all year round. It is a great feeling to swim in this steaming pool with a snow all around and unbelievable views of the mountains.

Steve & Sarah,
My husband and I visited the White Mountains in late September 2000. We hired a car for several days (which we picked up in Boston, following InterState 93 to the White Mountains - very straightforward) and found all the roads to be excellent - well maintained and no potholes (we're Brits too!). The Kancamagus highway has several "scenic stops", where you can pull over and enjoy breathtaking views. We stayed at the "Snowy Owl Inn" up in the mountains. Wonderful place - a huge "log cabin", with wonderful food and hospitality. It has a small town centre next door, where we found a small supermarket and various other shops. There was an ice-skating rink there too, and plenty of well maintained paths for walking. I hope you both enjoy your holiday - it was the best we've had - so far!!
Regards,
Pam
