We will be car-less in Waikiki, but don't mind taking The Bus. We love Kalua pork but don't want to go to a luau. Can anyone suggest restaurants which serve it? Thanks.

Yecchh, such an artery plugger; glad I avoid eating animal corpses nowdays. But back when, I concurred with many who said the best such Hawaiian food is just outside Waikiki at Ono Foods on Kapahulu. That street forms the eastern boundary of Waikiki; walk a mile or so away from the sea and find it and healthier places on the left.

There is also a Hawaiian eatery in the Ala Moana mall food court just to west of Waikiki that you can easily walk to, but it's not so special.

Ono is the best. Once a week it is at Zippy's.

On Kapahulu Avenue there is a place called Kanak Attack that should have it. I just went to a craft fair at Kawaihao Church & the Mission Houses Museum this past weekend, they had a booth that sold plate lunches with some good kalua and lau lau! But those craft fairs don't happen all the time, you need to check at www.gohawaii.com. you can also find it at local grocery stores to take home.

When I worked downtown there was a hole in the wall across from City Financial Tower. Kitty Korner from the post office. They had great pork and cabbage plate lunches.

Celebrity chef Alan Wong uses Kalua pork extensively. Try his restaurant the Pineapple Room in the Ala Moana mall. There are several kalua pork entrees.
