Kaanapali or Wailea/Makena?

Going in February. First to Waikiki for a conference (with some fun time) and then to Maui for vacation. Staying at Hilton Hawaiian Village on Oahu, so we'll be doing the big beach strip hotel thing. That is why I'm considering Wailea/Makena area on Maui. I'm thinking it would be more relaxing than Kaanapali.

Any hotel ideas? How about the Maui Prince? Kea Lani?

I just bought a great travel guide...(besides Fodor's of course!)It's called "Maui Revealed" and it has all kinds of info there on what to do and where to stay. It's written by locals who do their reviewing anonymously. Hope this helps, have fun in Maui!

In February, I would definately choose Wailea. That part of Maui has more sun, particularly during the winter months. I think the beaches are wider, whiter and softer than those in Kaanapali. It is more laid back and a bit farther from Lahaina, but we preferred it to Kaanapali.

I think your reasoning is correct - you'll be ready for something more relaxing. The Maui Prince is really off the beaten trail - I'd stay in Wailea/south Kihei area.

BY the way, Vacation Rentals By Owner (www.vrbo.com) offer some wonderful studios and apartments in Maui. I've never been disappointed with what I've rented there.

Pretty simple choice. Kaanapali has everything within walking distance. It's more hectic and busy than Wailea/Makena.

If you want to get away from crowds, and people and the general busy-ness of city life definitely chose Wailea/Makena.
