Just Back From Maui and Kauai - Questions?
Just back last night from 3 nights Hyatt Maui, 5 nights Four Seasons Maui and 6 nights Hyatt Kauai. It was our honeymoon, we are in our early 30's. Any questions for us? I used this site a lot in planning my trip, so now I will repay my debt with any advice anyone needs.

Were staying at the Maui Hyatt in 2/03. How was the construction in the pool area goign? Are they almost done? Did they block off access to the pool bar b/c of the construction. We were debating whether to stay at Hyatt vs 4 seasons but with an $800 price difference we were forced to choose the hyatt. Will we be dissapointed? We are used to lush and lavish and extravagant properties and loved the Kaui Hyatt. We want something that will be elegant and romantic. How does the Maui Hyatt compare to the Kaui? I heard the beach area at the Hyatt Maui stinks..Is it true.
What is the atmosphere at Wailea near the 4 seasons..Is it real quiet and you have to drive forever to find a restaraunt?

Molokini - we are scuba divers and used ed robinson's dive co. to go with. it was one of the best dives we have ever done! definetly go diving OR snorkeling (if you aren't a diver) there. we are not advanced divers. it was not a problem. ed robinson's guys really took care of us.
we are not big into tours..did most things on our own. did the drive up the west side of maui (past the ritz) up to the olivine pools and the blowhole. definetly recommend this drive, it was excellent..very beautiful. The Olivine pools were very unique. My husband swam there. A once-in-a-lifetime event.
Dive or Snorkel at Black Rock (right off the shore in front of the sheraton)..we saw a 6 ft white-tipped shark (more scared of us than vice-versa), tons of sea turtles, zebra moray eels and tons of great fish.
We got up at 1:45am to do the sunrise and downhillride at haleakala. most people love this. it was verynice..but getting up so early really hurt. i lost the night before because had to go to bed so early, and lost almost the whole next day between biking and then sleeping. i'd skip the sunrise and just drive up on my own for sunset.
also had lunch at some restaurant called the seahouse at napili bay. relaly great meal, and i think this beach was my favorite from both islands. really nice.
we bought that Maui Revealed guidebook 9the one with the blue cover) and used it constantly. it really made a huge difference for us.
hope that helps...

Four Seasons:
DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT, change your reservation from the four seasons due to construction. it was not a problem.
when we first arrived, we were a little intimidated thinking..we are not 4 seasons type people. within hours, we were sold. they make you feel right at home and like you own the place. they upgraded us from the cheapest room to a full ocean-view room. the concierge and the valet guys make your life so easy. take full advantage of the concierge..they are so helpful. the four seasons is the best hotel we have ever stayed at and we plan to go to others around the world now that we know.
when we wer there, we met another couple who went to the hyatt kauai and actually checked out and came back from there to the four seasons. it wasn't that they didn't like the hyatt kauai, but they LOVED the four seasons. they called the concierge at the four seasons who took care of everything for them - changed their flight, booked their rental car and upgraded them to a full ocean-view suite!
The Hyatt as well upgraded us. The ocean view room at the Hyatt Maui was really great to have, I have to tell you. But is it worth a couple of hundred more a night - I don't think so.
The Hyatt Maui construction was no big deal. No, it ddin't look like they were almost done, but it's not a problem, really. Yes, the swim-up bar is closed. But that wasn't a big deal either.
My husband and I actually liked the Hyatt Maui better than Kauai. We love having the beachwalk to walk hotel-to-hotel. We thought the refurbished rooms were much nicer - great beds! Yes, the Hyatt Maui beach is not nice..You will have to walk down the beach to use the beach.
The Grand Wailea is a nicer hotel than the Hyatt Maui. It is more like the Hyatt Kauai..very large, lots of pools, nice beach. No, we didn't have any problems finding good restaurant options.
If I was going back, I would probably do similiar to what I did. But maybe lengthen my tiem at the four seasons, and shorten my time in kauai.

lil, I've stayed at the Hyatt Kauai twice. The beach is beautiful, but it can be dangerous to swim in the ocean due to high surf and lots of boulders on the ocean bottom. There are local surfers in the water but they know where the best entry and exit spots are. If the surf is down then swimming is less risky, but waves are usually 6-12 ft. That is why the Hyatt built all the gorgeous interlocking freeform pools! But the beach is fine for sunning or walking, and there is a safer swimming beach down the road.

My fiance and I are planning trip to Maui in January for our honeymoon.
We cant figure out whether we should stay at the Hyatt Regency in Maui or the Four Seasons in Wailea. The only difference in price is about 350 more for the Four Seasons and that breakfast is included at the Hyatt.
I heard that Wailea has really nice shopping and it is nicer than Kaanapalbuti. I like upscale areas, bu I also tend to like to be where the action is and I like when there area a lot of things going on and a big resort. Does the Hyatt have more stuff going on than the Four Seasons? What would you recommend?

If you like upscale, then you should AVOID Kaanapali, PERIOD (although the area IS beautiful, but "hotel row" just is NOT as nice)! If you want more "action" and a large resort, then just walk next door to the Grand Wailea which is huge and luxurious. Ditto for the Kea Lani as well. Wailea does NOT have the isolated feeling that many people would have you believe! And Lahaina, although quite busy with more nightlife that you seek, is nothing more than a cheap, tawdry waterfront fishing village, somewhat reminiscent of Front Steet in Kay West!

I agree that the Grand Wailea and the Kea Lani are very nice resorts, however Kaanapali beach area has very nice resorts as well. I stayed at the Embassy Vacation Resort (on the Kaanapali coastline) on my honeymoon in 2000 and that was one of the best vacations ever! We had a partial ocean view room facing the pool/lagoon area (excellent view!). The rooms look exactly like they do in the advertisments. You can't go wrong with the Embassy Suites (although they are 90% timeshare now). We saw rainbows almost everyday and Maui's best sunsets can be seen from the Kaanapali coast.
ps. Don't worry about not having screens on your lani doors. Maui has virtually no flies or mosquito's! In an entire week there, we only saw 1 fly and NO MOSQUITO'S!!! The only thing that flew into our room was a bird.
pps. almost forgot - you gotta eat at MAMA'S FISH HOUSE while there! Beautiful oceanview while you dine and the menu changes daily with the fisherman's name next to each item. Plan on spending at least $100 per couple for dinner. I think it's near Kahului airport around Paia.
