Just back from Leavenworth, WA

I just spent a week in Leavenworth, WA. Some tips & hints: The Blackbird Hotel is great, nice views (pay the $10 extra for a view, pretty good breakfasts, great price. Visit the Ranger Station if you want to do something other than shopping, there are some great hikes to take nearby. The shopping is fun, some stuff way over priced, some normal. One not so normal price was gas - $1.79/gal for regular!! It was only $1.39 just 50 miles away! If you have questions, I'll try to answer them.

I went to Levenworth once and found the heat sweltering in mid May. I can't even imagine how much like a blast furnace it must be in August. Hated all the crowds and shops. Did like the German food.

Sylvia, I stayed at the Blackbird about 5 years ago, and we loved it. I just had a question...do they still set your breakfast tray in the small window area to your room? We never had our beakfast delivered that way before, and we thought it was a great idea.

Our room, and our friends room, overlooked the River behind the Hotel, and it was very peaceful sitting on the balcony listening to the nighttime sounds.

Sheila, I was wondering the same thing about the breakfasts. We stayed there about 6 years ago and loved it too. We enjoyed walking the loop trail on the island (Blackbird Island?) behind it.

Sheila;
I planned to answer your question today, I don't check this message board more than once a day! Sorry! Yes, the Blackbird Lodge still has the little pass-through windows into the rooms where they put your breakfast. I'd never seen that before, either! It's such a quiet, nice place to stay.

We have reservations at the Enzian Inn over Memorial Day weekend--Blackbird was full. Can't wait. Appreciate any other info. Thanks.

Enzian is nice. The beds were comfy. Get to the breakfast early though or you can miss out on all the goodies.

Also, for the best lunch in town, I highly recommend the Soup Cellar.

Their food is fantastic.

Avoid Tumwater Inn for any meal. We ate there twice, once for dinner and once for breakfast and found it to be horrible.

I second what ST wrote. Soup Cellar is fantastic (try their French Dip, it's delish) but, whatever you do, avoid Tumwater Inn.
We had dinner there and it was the worst.

Thanks for the information...we'll be in Leavenworth in late Aug. As for the heat...can't be any worse than SW FL in the summer.

It was snowing and sticking at Stevens Pass this morning. No May heat waves in the immediate forecast, alas.

Wasn't today's weather strange? Couldn't believe it was snowing that hard in May.

Anyway, to all who read, the Soup Cellar is terrific. Melanies statement about the French Dip is right on. It is very good. Myself, I liked their chili in a bread bowl. And their prices are better than you'd expect.
We tried that Tumwater place when we were there last time and never again.
There are way too many good places to eat in this town but Tumwater isn't one of them

We have lived here for 10 years and love it here.

Soup Cellar: Great lunch place (maybe the best, imo)

Enzian: very nice place to stay (except ski season weekends)

Tumwater: bad service, terrible food, over priced. (better to stay away from this place, imo)

My family was in Leavenworth back in August 97 - there wasn't any sweltering heat during the days I was there! I think it varies on the weather forecast.

Leavenworth hasn't won me over in the summer yet but the WINTER --YES! Went over twice this past winter, introduced our daughters to xcty skiing, perfect weather , perfect snow, the town looked like a fairytale with all the Christmas lights and snow Stayed at Haus Rohrbach B and B, had a nice suite.

Enzian was real nice. Didn't see the soup Cellar but will look for it next time in town (which is next week)

I second the notion about Tumwater Inn. We ate there once and won't ever again.

Italian place (by starbucks) was very good. Sorry, can't remember the name.

Back from Leavenworth. Weather was great and Enzian Inn was wonderful--pay the extra for the family suite. Loved the evening piano concerts in the lobby. Visited the Soup Cellar on Prime Rib Night--awful. Soups were OK and salad was salad. Favorite was the Leavenworth Pizza parlor. Best pizza I ever ate! Shopping was good and plan to return at Christmas for the lights.

Back from our trip. Had a wonderful time. Enzian sure is nice.

Had lunch at Soup Cellar and it was wonderful. First off, I would never go to a lunch place for prime rib. That's like going to MacDonalds for a seafood buffet. We had the french dip (which was fantastic) and my husband had the chili in a bread bowl (which was even better). Salad is salad. We didn't try it but it looked ok. They had 2 soups out that smelled good also.
I agree that the Leavenworth pizza parlor is terrific. We ate there once and wanted to go back but didn't have enough time. (next time)
We're booked for the Xmas lighting so can't wait.
