Juniper Hill Inn in Ogunquit, Maine

Does anyone have any comments or suggestions about their stay here? What is in the area that we should see? I would really like to go to the beach, is the beach in Ogunquit
nice, or should be head somewhere elso to
beachcomb? We like to search around the tide pools and look for things on the beach. (I've never been to Maine but i'm pretty sure there aren't a whole lot of shells on the beach are there)? Any information would be helpful.

I hate to disappoint you, but Ma. is not the place for beach combing unless it is for driftwood, flotsom and jetsom. You must make reservations for dinner at one of the best restaurants in N.E. Ogunquits ARROWS. For Sunday lunch(it has live jazz) or any other day, THE HURRICANE, great view of the ocean!

Ogunquit is a wonderful place. I know you'll have a great time. I've been there twice now, although I didn't stay at the Juniper Inn.

As for beachcoming, not a lot of shells to be had. But it is a very pleasant beach to walk. You'll also enjoy the Marginal Way, a rocky mile-long coastal path that takes you to Perkins Cove. You can see some tidal action from the rocks along the Marginal Way, too.

I think that Ogunquit beach is one of the finest beaches in Maine. Ogunquit has a number of places to each, however if you are looking for something more casual, head north on route one to Wells Maine, where there is seven miles of sandy beach lots of spots to explore tidal pools. Several motels and campgrounds are in the area in all price ranges. This is one of my favorite vacation spots..Just one more thing, the beaches have lifeguards on duty during the day, but the water temperature is cold. I usually like to choose a motel with a pool.
Enjoy your trip if you go!

Ogunquit is a beautiful town. I have never stayed at the Juniper Inn, however it is centrally located. The Beach is beautiful, and many hotels and motels are walking distance. There are shops and restaurants in Perkins Cove, a short walk or trolly ride from the beach. At low tide there are a few tidal pools, however you can head north to Wells Beach, which is a little more casual/ At low tide there are plenty of tidal pools among the rocks.
Accomodations in Wells are a little less expensive than Ogunquit, and there are a few motels directly on the Beach, as well as on route 1, which is quite busy.
I hope you enjoy Maine

Kelly,
We just came back from a mid-week stay at the Juniper Hill Inn and had just a great time. Although we tried to get over on the Shore Road (The Anchorage and Sparhawk were booked) the JHI was recommended by both and lived up to its recommendation by having extremely clean rooms, only a short walk from the center of town, two wonderfully refreshing crystal clear pools, and friendly staff and very quiet rooms for being on a busy road! One point I'd tell you is I thought the walk to the beach would be closer but it was about 10 minutes which was fine with us because we love to walk but a little work on the way back (up) with all of our beach belongings that were wetter and heavier on the return trip!
We loved Ogunquit and will return with our family next year. If you want any more specifics I will be glad to provide you with them. Have a good trip.

Thanks everyone for the info.

Wendy, according to the handbooks I
have it appears that the Inn is right on the water (beyond the trees). I'm
assuming from the walk you mentioned that this is just the waters edge and not a beach. Is there any place right there by the Inn to take a stroll along the water? Also, we are not staying in the actual Inn, but in one of the buildings the have on the property, I hope these are as clean as you mentioned. I understand that the trolly
stops here, did you get a chance to take
advantage of it? If so, any places to stop off and see? What about places to
eat, any suggestions? Thanks again!

Hi Kelly,
I was away for a few days---sorry for the delay in answering. We thought by the maps we saw on-line that the motel sat right on the water as well but it does not. There is a path that goes between the bldgs. and leads down to a lower road which you then follow to the footbridge and over to the beach. It is a good 10 minute walk. Like I said--we thought it was closer as well. It wasn't a bad walk but if you are lugging stuff like we did we might have packed a little lighter! Also, I think the map makes the Inn more spread out than it really is. It is just a series of motel quarters. They are not that spread out---much more a motel feeling than a traditional "inn" that you would find on Shore Road. And yes, the trolley stops right in front but I'll tell you if you like to walk--nothing is that far away. We did the Marginal Way each day to Perkins Cove and even on the hottest days (our week was 90+) the breeze off the water was great. We had booked a reservation at Hurricane Restaurant in Perkins Cove and even though the food was delicious I have to be really honest and say we were "sandwiched" between two tables of five and our waiter was very friendly but SLOW because he was servicing the bigger tables. I was disappointed--also it was a hot evening at low tide and the restaurant was hot!
Had a fun meal at both Barnacle Billy's and Oarweed (very friendly people). We really parked our car and made it a walking vacation. I loved Ogunquit--just go ready to explore on your own and read previous postings for other restaurant suggestions. Hope your time is as good as ours was.

The Juniper Hill Inn is very nice - very clean and well-maintained, rooms are quiet. 3 pools - 2 outdoor, 1 indoor, and a fitness room. Free coffee and newspapers in morning. Courteous staff. Good location for town - just a 3 minute walk. The beach, however, is a good 10-15 minute walk. Pretty tiring on a hot day.
In the summer, Ogunquit is ridiculously overcrowded - frequently heavy traffic on Route 1, waiting lines at most every restaurant, wall-to-wall people in town and on Ogunquit Beach. Marginal Way has pedestrian traffic from early morning until well into the evening. Although it's a cute town and a nice beach, I'll never go back again during the summer months. Do yourself a favor - either don't go in July/August or if you do, head for Wells Beach a few miles north if you'd like a little more "elbow room" when you settle down on the sand. You can do the same with restaurants - drive a few miles from Ogunquit and avoid (most) of the crowds.
