Hi Jannik,
In your case I suggest a taxi as you say "we" which I gather is 2 or more people. The taxi fare from JFK is a fixed rate of $35 plus tolls and tip. The total should be about $47 if you take a toll bridge or tunnel, a few dollars less if you take a free bridge. The bus from JFK to midtown Manhattan is $13 per person BUT the bus will not take you to the area of your hotel (Upper West Side) so you would have to change for a taxi to complete the trip (an additional $8). I always champion public transportation but for your circumstances, more than 1 person, luggage, location of your hotel, I think that a taxi is the only way to go. Have fun.

This a great link to transportation options from JFK into Manhattan. I would recommend taking a cab.
