JFK to jersey (Newport)
I'm arriving at JFK (International flight) and my accomodation is at Pavonia/Newport.. (I know.. should have taken EWR but last minute changes..)
Anyways, how do I get to Newport? We (couple)are arriving at 8 in the morning with three big bags.
I gather that one can take a shuttle which drops you at 42nd Street and then we can cab it up to Newport. That would cost us USD 15*2 i.e USD 30 plus a cab fare of USD 30? That would mean a total fare of USD 60.(Is that correct?)
Another option is take a taxi straight to Newport which would cost us, not sure... USD 100?
Are my numbers and information correct?
What option would you suggest considering three bags? Pay the USD 30-40 extra or the shuttle+taxi should be convinient even with so much luggage?
Please help...Totally confused

First of all, if you take a cab be sure to tell the driver you are going to Jersey City, NJ. Newport is the name of the part of Jersey City with the financial center and mall.
If $ is a consideration you can take shuttle or public transport to NY Penn Station, where you can pick up the PATH trains to NJ.
If time is more important than $, I would take a car service. Dial7 or carmel limos - the cost will probably be no more than a cab.

You don't want to take a taxi from Manhattan to New Jersey. Drivers won't want to go, they may not know their way and it will cost too much (don't know where you got the $30 quote). If you want door to door service, a car service is the way to do it. J62 has mentioned the 2 most often used cos.

dial7.com
I like limores.net
For a cheaper option, if your hotel is near the Pavonia/Newport PATH train station, seeing this PATH map will help you envision your options
http://www.panynj.gov/CommutingTrave.../html/map.html
I'd say
1)While you're getting a quote for car service from JFK, also get a quote from them for picking you up in Manhattan (either at Port Authority or Penn Station or elsewhere) and taking you to the Pavonia hotel from there.
2) As J26 says, take the Airport Express Shuttle bus from JFK to Penn Station (NYC) NOT Port Authority.

Penn Station is at 34 st and there's a PATH train station at 33 st. You'll have to change trains as the map shows, but you should be there in 15 mins.

Thanks Guys.
I called up Carmel. They quoted me USD 80+toll+gratuity for JFK-Pavonia.
J62, as mentioned by you, there was in fact a confusion as to the place when I called up limores.net. I was wondering why dint he understand Newport. I plan to call up Dial7 now.
However, I did like the idea of mclaurie about getting a quote from the agency for the Penn Station-Pavonia.
Frankly, I'm not sure how will I be able to manage a combination of public transport as I have three pretty huge bags. (we are two of us and are on a 25 day trip with loads of stuff for relatives in NYC).
So I am weighing two options -
1) Car service from JFK to Pavonia.
OR
2) shuttle to Newark or Penn and then cab it up to Pavonia.
Any idea how much would that cost?
Mclaurie, the USD 30 shuttle cost is from the Port Authority website. Its the oriental shuttle which charges USD 15 per person.
If the diffrential between both these options is not much (maybe around $20-30) then we are inclined to take the direct route considering our baggage.

With that amount of luggage trains really are not an option.
I would do direct service from JFK to wherre you want to go via car service .
If you take a shuttle bus into Manhattan (Port Authority or Penn Station) it will be at least $15 each - total $30 or so. To get a cab from there to Newark will be about $60 (you have to pay fare plus $10 for cab to get back to city plus tunnel toll plus tip). So - a total of about $90. And many cabs will not want to go to Jersey - so the trip will be longer, as well as not costing any less.

Agree with nytraveler.
Will you to have to make this same trip on the return? If yes, I suggest you discuss that with limores since they offer a discount if you reserve roundtrip.
The Express bus from JFK into Manhattan wherever you get off is $15/person one way or $27 roundtrip. I was questioning the $30 taxi charge you were quoting from Manhattan to Pavonia. That's not going to happen (imo) so NO, your estimate of $60 for the trip is not correct. Tolls between JFK and Pavonia will be $8-10 and a tip of $12-15 so you're talking about a total cost of $105 with Carmel's $80 quote.

Exactly.. So I guess I will go ahead with Carmel.. Mclaurie I'm not taking the same return trip, so no discount!.
So I guess with so much luggage, its best I reach Pavonia directly.
Thanks guys.. Needed this assurance to spend the $100...
