Jekyll or St. Simons?
We have never been to GA and are thinking of going in May to Savannah and the islands. We would like an oceanfront condo on a nice beach. We don't need a lot of activity around. Which island would be better and do you have any specific condo recommendations?
Also, what's the Hampton Inn in the historic district of Savannah like? Unfortunately, my husband really dislikes B&B's and small inn type places.
Thanks.

Jekyll Island is pretty with lots of flowers and old mansions, St Simons is mostly newer homes.
The beach has very little waves and can be full of jellyfish, but an interesting place to visit.
If you want a good beach-go to Fernandina Beach, FL or up to SC. You chose a good time to go!

Jackie, we used to live in Savannah and found it virtually impossible to go the beach in St. Simons as there was practically no public beach access. The hotel there is lovely but very exclusive and not on the water, but across the street. They have their own private beach and residential areas blocked access to other beaches where we were. The sand there is brown and hard packed, as it is up and down this section of the coast (from the FL border through SC).
There is a beach off Savannah, Tybee Island, where there are some relatively inexpensive places to stay, or, even closer than Jekyll, and more upscale than either that or Tybee, is Hilton Head where you have your choice of accommodations.
The Hampton Inn was being built just as we moved 4 years ago, so it's relatively new. Is that the one on Bay St? Two went up almost simultaneously. The location is convenient but it'll be another Hampton Inn...still you aren't there to sit in your room, so no problem. Enjoy the city!

Not sure if one of the previous replies is actually talking about St. Simons. There is a public beach parking lot which I can't imagine is ever full. Plus there's parking at the pier which gives you access to the beach. There is only one hotel on the beach - The King and Prince. It's right on the beach not across the street. I think the previous poster might have been thinking of Sea Island which you get to from St. Simons. Sea Island has one hotel - The Cloisters which is very exclusive. The island has beautiful homes on the beach. WHile the beach is public, there really isn't any public access to it.
St. Simons is nice and doesn't seem like a beach town. Several very nice golf courses and good restaurants.
Tybee is like one big beach town.
