Jazz in Honolulu

We're leaving for Honolulu on Monday (9/17) and staying for a week. I've been researching places we might go for an evening or two of jazz. So far have come up with The Green Room at the Indigo Restaurant and Jazz Minds Art & Cafe.

Would appreciate comments about these two venues and suggestions for other possibilities. Is Chuck's Cellar still open? I tried an URL that didn't work.

Thanks for any info.

Chuck's Cellar is still open.

Not their website, but some info:

Don't know anything about this place except I've walked past it:

also:

Google: jazz waikiki or jazz honolulu or jazz oahu

Thanks Dusty!

I did google; that's how I found Jazz Minds.

Anyone else?

There must be other Fodorites who are jazz fans and can help us find places to go.

Have you tried
http://honolulujazzscene.net/

The calendar spans this week, not next week, but you can see some of the regular gigs. You might also try to contact the webmaster or the individual venues.

If you scroll down on the calendar, you will see something called "Ward's Rafters." The woman who is in charge of this, Jackie, is THE source for jazz in Honolulu. You need to call her (area code 808) because she has one of those funny filters on her email, and by the time you get it worked out, you will already be in Honolulu.

The Dragon Upstairs is above a legendary dive called "Hank's" and may be hard for you to find. But if your Indigo night coincides with jazz at Dragon, then maybe you can wander over.

Hope that's a good start?

I forgot--the Honolulu Club, which is located across (ward avenue) from the Blaisdell Center, has jazz on Wednesdays that is super popular. You probably need to go early to get in, as I have heard that the space has become too small for the crowd it attracts.

Also while you are scanning the schedules, the more renowned/established jazz performers include:
Betty Loo Taylor
Azure McCall
Honolulu Jazz Quartet
NewJass Quartet (actually, they are up-and-coming but good)
Quadpod NeoBop Quartet (I'm not familiar with the group name, but the guys IN it are well known)
Sonya Mendez
Ginai
Eight0eight
Kit Samson

Jon Basebase is good, but I *think* his music is on the "easy listening" end. If you go to a venue and Howard Nett is playing, tell him Melissa from Aloha Tower said hi.
