I too must echo a love for Amelia Island for both the beaches and the historic downtown. And previous posts couldn't have said it better - there is definitely more nice places to choose from besides just the Ritz and Plantation and September is considered 'off-season' at most area mid-range hotels so you're sure to find a deal even better than some of the B&B's. Near the beach you have Amelia Hotel at the Beach; Hampton Inn (Sadler Rd location) and a Comfort Inn (Atlantic Ave) all of which run very reasonable rates and are close to the sand. Plus the historic district is only about 2-4 miles from each of these hotels, so nothing is inconvenient to get to.
It's so nice compared to most "beach towns" because it's still a small town feel to it. Plus it does not feel as commercialized as St. Augustine seems to be nowadays. And on Amelia Island you'll find free beach access and free parking at both the beach and the downtown. That's always a nice plus.
