Jack London / Oakland area romantic dinner??? Help!

Looking for a cozy little dinner out for two to celebrate my man's b-day! Where to eat for around $40-(ish) per person...love wine!! Somewhere near the water maybe? Someone mentioned Skates in Berkeley...what do you think? Oh, by the way...it's for Friday nite!!! (yikes)

I have not been to Skates, I thought it was priced high. Maybe you could check to see if they have a website. Not as romantic, but not without their own great personalities are Yoshi's (especially if you like jazz) and across the street Jack's. Jack's is on the water, but not as intimate. You will probably get more for your money at Jack's.

You may be to late to book this, but Chez Panisse is a wonderful place and very romantic. It is not on the water, but I have had several special dinners there and try to recommend it whenever I can. Go to the website and check out the menu to see if it is too expensive for you and to find out how to make a reservation. http://www.chezpanisse.com/

I would tell them it is a special occasion and they may be able to work with you on the last minute reservations.

Kincaid's Bayhouse is right on the water at Jack London Square...and delicious!

Soizic on Broadway, near Jack London Square. Bay Wolf on Piedmont. Citron on College Ave in Rockridge is nice, as is Rivoli on Solano in Berkeley. Downstairs at Chez Panisse is too expensive for you (except on Mondays), and offers no choice re menu, but the Cafe upstairs is in your range and is an easier reservation to get. None is on the water, but as in most places, good food and on the water don't really go together.

I couldn't argue with any of the suggestions so far. But I do LOVE Skates location and view. I don't find it as expensive as some of the others (Chez Panisse for instance). If it is clear sitting in a window table at Skates with a view of three bridges and the lights of San Francisco - unbelievable.

Their collection of beers and single malt scotch is remarkable.

I like to go early enough to see the sunset and the lights come on. (actually I like it even better for lunch since the sail boats, etc really add to the view)
