Itinerary Opinion.
I just wanted to get feedback on my itinerary. We will be renting a car for two weeks this summer late July/early August. Here goes:
Fly into anchorage. 2nights, Aspen Anchorage with Great Alaskan toursaver coupon
Seward Windsong Lodge 3 nights with toursaver coupon.(Fjords tour with coupon)
1 night Alyeska Prince Hotel in Girdwood
2 nights Talkeetna Alaskan hotel
2 nights Aspen Fairbanks with coupon
3 nights Denali Can use coupon on Denali cabins or possibly Cedars Lodge(See my previous post) still deciding on this one
1 nightAnchorage Aspen and then home.
Do you think three nights in Denali is too much? Should I cut it down to two and spend my last two nights down near Palmers or off the Glenn Highway somewhere? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Incidentally, for any of you planning this type of a trip, the toursaver book is saving us a fortune on all kinds of stuff. I have confirmed reservations at the hotels listed,at Kenai Fjords tour, flightseeing in Talkeetna, The Riverboat in Fairbanks just to name a few. It is worth every penny of the 100.we spent for the book. You will recoup the savings on the first night in the hotel.

You really want my opinion? Here it goes. Cancel the trip. If you can't get the deposit back consider it a small price to pay for an education.
Take your money and buy plane tickets to Hawaii. You will have better weather, better food, equal (if not better) scenery, and if you are in sync for whale watching then that tops it off.
I am afraid you will be BORED after two days in Alaska. That will not happen in Hawaii.
I am sorry to tell you that. But I figure I save you a ton of money now rather than later.

Alaska is stunning. We were in Denali two nights, but three should be OK, depending on your interests. It will improve your odds of actually seeing Mt McKinley (Denali), which is obscured most of the time. And it should be a relaxing period between some very long drives. On the way back to Anchorage, look for the Iditarod HQ in Wasilla. It's the official start for the race and there's a little shop where they show a video.

Alaska is beautiful. I think 2 nights in Denali was enough for me, but it's your choice. Take the park shuttle instead of a tour. Take the fjiord tour out of Seward. I stayed at the Alyeska and it was a really nice hotel. There's some good hiking around there. You will love Alaska. I did and I'm going back.

I can be mistaken, but things to do in Talkeetna is for seeing Denali, like the flightseeing, which in this case you won't need 2 nights. Also flightseeing is good only if the weather is clear.
I spent 2 days in Denali, and one of it was for a full day shuttle all the way to Wonder Lake. The other day was for the dog sled demo, ranger programs, and some hiking. Spend 3 days in Denali if you'll be doing more hiking; with 3 days you increase your chances of seeing Mt Mckinley.
Great views of Denali and other mountains plus Chulitna River can be seen from the Parks Highway at one of Denali state park lookouts. I think it is the one at milepost 135.2; it's a very busy viewpoint, lots of cars and campers pulling in and out .
For me, Fairbanks had more interesting places to see and things to do than 2 days would allow, but this is just my opinion. I liked the Univ of Alaska museum and their programs on northern lights and native Alaskan games, the Fort Knox gold mining tour, gold dredge #8 national historic site, and trans-Alaska pipeline viewpoint. I managed to get a tour of the Poker Flat Rocket facility. Chena Hot spring road is dotted with many ponds and saw a lot of moose and at the end of the road is a hot spring resort.
But however you spend your time in Alaska, you'll find you'd want to go back and see more of it.
