On the SLIGHT chance this isn't a joke (it is your first and only post so I guess we can cut you some slack) -- I'd suggest you post this over on the Europe Board.
But be prepared to be slammed unless you do some homework first - include things like when are you going, what sort of budget, how you plan on traveling w/i Italy, what sorts of things you like, etc.
And if this is a troll - just forget the whole thing . . . . . . .

"But be prepared to be slammed... "
Nothing like scaring visitors away. Why do regulars feel they have the license to 'slam' people for not following some unwritten 'rules' on an open and informal forum such as this? Loosen up, Fodorites.

What kind of complete idiot would suggest that when someone kindly suggests a person asking about European travel post the question on the Europe rather than the US board, she is invoking some sort of "unwritten" rules and "slamming" someone.
Duh. So you really think it makes sense to encourage people to ask questions about the baseball score in the Japanese game last week on the Carribean board for example, gbhost? Boy are you a wierdo!!!!! Suggesting that someone who wants help with a question about Europe, they should post it on the Europe board only makes sense, something you obviously totally lack!!

As suggested try the Europe board. But, a very broad question is difficult to answer without your providing a bit more information such as budget, when you're going, length of time, and interest.
If you have little interest in planning and little interest in working through an itinerary, I might suggest you think about taking a tour like the one offered by Perillo.

I think you are proving my point. "Complete idiot"? That's a bit harsh, isn't it? And, forgive me, perhaps I wasn't clear enough. I didn't disagree that the poster should be directed to the Europe forum, I was just making a point about up-tight regulars (apparently like yourself)slamming people if they don't ask questions properly with the inclusion of time you're going, budget, interests, etc.
Your "idiot" remarks and calling me a "weirdo" really were totally un-called for, regardless of your ability to understand my point. Again, you are an excellent illustration of the constipated self-appointed board police who belittle casual visitors to this INFORMAL forum and ultimately scare them away. Loosen up, take a pill, get a life....

gbhost -
Sorry - there's a big differenc between "informal" and brainless. There's no way anyone who put more than 10 seconds of thought into it could ask that question. And for the "constipated regulars" to object to that sort of question - along with a suggestion to go the europe board is - IMHO - a perfectly reasonable response.
(What would you do if someone walked into a supermarket - said "I want food" and simply stood there? This is the written equivalent!)

nytraveler, actually your example isn't quite the same. What you should have said was "what if someone walked into a tire store and said I want food" and just stood there. The question wasn't even asked in the right forum!
And gbghost, I'll stand by my original assessment of your intelligence or lack of it. And I'm sure there are many who would agree. Only a true idiot does not understand guidelines or suggestions to follow them.

Perhaps you didn't read my second post. I did not find it unreasonable to send the poster to the Europe forum. Let me repeat, it was perfectly legitimate to send the poster to the Europe forum.
But let's bust a gut if the poster doesn't do homework before burdening the very busy people here with a thoughtful and detailed question. And then, let's accept this Patrick character's outburst hollaring "Complete Idiot" and "weirdo" at folks. Instead of chastising Patrick for his lack of manners, you come after me for saying things are a little stiff around here when people warn you to do your homework before asking a question ("What kind of complete idiot wouldn't include the dates of their trip? What? You didn't indicate what area of Italy you want to go to? Are you a total weirdo?!?)
And in closing, I did not find it unreasonable to send the poster to the Europe forum to ask about Italy.

I'm not idiot enough to dare judge someone's intelligence based upon their misunderstood paragraph on a discussion board.
And are there no guidelines here Patrick, to refrain from rude ad hominem attacks? And if there were, couldn't you be accused of not following them?

When someone posts a post as totally uncalled for as your first one, all guidelines towards that "person" and I do use that term loosely, are thrown out the window. Your first post was totally uncalled for, and I will make no excuses about calling you whatever I did for making it. But I'm so glad that your posts show you are not "uptight" like the rest of us -- yea, right.
And yes, I will judge your lack of intelligence based on what you have written here. No apologies for that!!

Dolphins1217, I hope you haven't been scared away.
Please head over the the Europe forum. I would suggest reading some of the other posts first so you'll see how others ask questions.
You will also notice how threads can get taken over by others for the weirdest of reasons, not just this one.

Firstly, dolphins has made only ONE post on Fodors.com TravelTalk. Chances are he/she may be a troll and has reached the desired goal.
Secondly, ghost, you started this so please stop. Janis politely requested the poster post on the Europe Board and YOU came back with, and I quote you verbatim, "Why do regulars feel they have the license to 'slam' people for not following some unwritten 'rules' on an open and informal forum such as this? Loosen up, Fodorites".
Thirdly, this board often has hiccups and sometimes even if you post on one board it will show up on another.
Patrick, you are above this.

I promise, gotravel, that this is my final post on this subject, but to defend my original post for a third time, your point here is inaccurate:
"Janis politely requested the poster post on the Europe Board and YOU came back with....
I was not commenting about the request to move to another board. I came back with nothing about her polite request.
Janis politely warned the poster to be prepared to be 'slammed' for not doing their homework. I came back with my comments about being 'slammed'and my opinion of the inappropriateness of 'slamming' people - and again, referring to the homework paragraph, not the choice of forum paragraph. I had hoped my reference to being 'slammed' would have made this clear. Apparently not, so my apologies, again, for the misunderstanding.
