My wife and I are considering a trip to the island. We are an older couple, 66 and 71. We are in good health. We have wanted to visit for a long time and are just now finding time. We want to stay at the lodge, do some hiking, photography, maybe sightseeing tours.

I have read that the island has wolves. Are they a concern when hiking? What about moose?

Can anyone with experience on the island give us some insight as to what to expect?

Isle Royale is very rustic (even when staying at the lodge) but you will enjoy hiking and photography. At the present time officials believe there are only 3 wolves left on the island due to inbreeding and they feel one of the 3 is not well, so don't think you will have any problems with wolves. There are a lot more moose on the island than wolves, however, I don't know anyone who has had a problem with them. One of my friends has a family homestead on the island (original fishing families) and they see one particular moose every time they are at their cabin and he comes around just to see them but never bothers them. She said they have seen other moose while out on the island but have never had a problem. What time of year do you plan to go? It is late in the season to go there now. There is transportation to the island from Houghton, MI, Copper Harbor, MI and Grand Portage, MN. The Grand Portage to Isle Royale trip is shorter but of course you have to get to Northern MN. Have a great time.

I wouldn't worry about moose, just know that they are unpredictable. If you run into a mother with her calf, give them a wide berth as she will be very protective of the baby.

Wolves are not an issue as Cali mentioned.

You are FAR more likely to be attacked by a moose than by a wolf.
