Hello all... I can't decide if I should go ahead and get this airfare booked up or wait it out a little longer. I tend to think it's too early for the best deal but then again for this particular route maybe it's not likely to get any better.

Leaving Kansas City on Sept 6 (Labor Day) to San Diego and returning from a different city, LAX to K.C. on the 12th, a red-eye flight. Both have brief layovers in Dallas with American Airlines. Priced today on Orbitz at $298. I was hoping for something around the $250 range (at three tickets purchased, that's around $150 savings) but maybe that's totally unrealistic.

Just looking for some opinions today... Thanks!

Does Southwest Airlines fly to KC? They generally set the low price and right now they are only booking thru May 8.

I called the Southwest reservation line a month or so ago and was told for a multicity ticket like that it would cost a lot more than a regular roundtrip ticket. That doesn't seem to be the case for the other airlines.

I`d say track the rates on orbitz, travelocity, expedia, whatever you use, for a while. The best fare I`ve found for my upcoming trip in March, was on orbitz on a Tuesday evening, around 7pm Pacific time. I`ve heard the best time to check is Tuesday,midnight, but the fare had gone up a little by then. I`m also flying into and out of a different city. Those fares change constantly. By the next morning, all my flights weren`t even listed. I was diligent checking. You have lots of time to check.

Is it absolutely imperative you fly open-jaw? Would you save anything by using Orange County (SNA) only? Note that it's about an hour south of LA and a little over an hour north of San Diego-- an easy drive (I assume you will be renting a car)....

For the convenience of it, I really want to fly home from L.A. I plan to rent a car for a leisurely drive between S.D. and L.A. but don't know if I'll keep it for use in L.A. for such a short time. I'm thinking of using taxis to get to and from Dodger Stadium for a Friday night game and a Saturday game, and if it's a night game on Saturday just have that same taxi take us to the airport after the game, picking up our luggage on the way.

I've got till 10:00 p.m. tomorrow to take this airfare or let it go. And it's actually $292, not $298. I'm leaning towards taking it right now.

Thanks for your thoughts, everybody. I'll keep checking today for any others.

I haven't been out that direction for about 18 months, but my past experience has been that I could usually find KC to LA flights in the low $200 range.
